But seriously, TKD for self D? Come on. Who's ever got 15 feet to get a running start for an acrobatic kick in a crowded bar? If you had 15feet to begin with, chances are you wouldn't have pissed each other off in the first place!!!!!!!! lol.

TKD is great my son does it. But when he's old enough he'll train in judo with me so he can gain some real world useful skills

Anyway here's my bit on self defence that i posted in another thread

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can't believe no-one has mentioned Judo. Its pressure tested (competition), is adaptable and is widely known and recognised as the best support system in a fight should the fight get close in. Its what a lot of doorman train in. Geoff Thompson Renowned self protection expert and ex doorman) says judo is the best kept secret in martial arts. I used to know a couple of dan grades that worked the door and they literally OWNED every confrontation they found themselves in. Wing Chun is the biggest pile of shyte going (sorry all you wingchunners) I sparred full contact with a Wing Chun red sash and had him submitting 2 times in a couple of mins from two chokes. The 3rd time i threw him on the deck with a bastardised osotogari (grabbing the trachea and powering through) and funnily enough he didn't fancy anymore. Plus their strikes carry zero power (they punch fresh air in training) and under stressful conditions they recall sod all of their fancy straight line punches. (well thats my opinion anyway)

Self defence is so much more than learning to strike. Its all about awareness, situational control, body language, posturing.

I train in Judo and Urban Combatives which is just that. Urban combat. We train to strike pre emptively and cover all bases of combat. Judo is my support sustem.

My advice? Train 3 or 4 pre emptive strikes and drill them until they are second nature. Learn to hit fukcing hard and hit first. When you are faced with a real situation and adrenaline is a factor all your learned fancy training and targetting will go out the window. You will rely on a few gross motor strikes. Judo is the best support system because it is pressure tested in competition. Forget BJJ...if you go to the ground in a bar you are IN THE S*** and someone (anyone...not even someone involved in the altercation) will feel the need to play football with your head.

Look up F.A.S.T training. Fear and Adrenal Stress Training. A lot of martial artsist have had a bit of a shock when attending on of these course. Sudeenly their Karate 'death punches' don't do S*** under the infuelnce of adrenaline.

In summary train strikes (3 or 4)...my suggestion. Elbow,Hammerfist, tiger claw palm strike (you don't want to hit a skull with bare knuckles..learning open hand strikes will allow you to employ continuous attack rather than F****** your hand with the first punch) and chinjab.Traing them hard with full agression and if possible get your training partner to simualte adrenaline by calling you all sorts of names, getting in your face, spitting at you. Then train them pre-empotively hitting the pad with 110% agression and with all the force you can muster. We are looking for a one punch knockout here if that doesn't happen you wan't contiunous attack until the threat has gone.

Choose Judo as your support system should the fight get in close. It teaches you weight displacement and body mechanics. Enabling you to get back into a position to win the fight from a standup. Also you can slam the c*nt into the deck. Ever been thrown on concrete from a judoka? You aint getting up.

Minsdet also plays a huge part in self defence. Train agression 110% when you train. You need to be able to flick a swtich in your head and be at 110% agression and fight until there is f*ck all left to fight about.

Self defece/urban combat regardless of art is 80% aggression 20% technique. Ever seen squaddies fight? They are some of the most ferocious fighters i have ever seen yet they hardly have any formal training. Yet their mindset is second to none for out and out aggression.

    Thats my two penneth anyway.

I buy that, a judo hip toss onto concrete would be horribly painful and more than likely fight ending. The little judo training I've had is very useful, makes total sense, and worked perfectly on people who were much bigger than me. One thing that has to be taken into consideration though, what physical gifts do you have? None of this is said in bragging but I personally have alot of natural speed, power, and coordination in my hands/feet, so everything I do is gonna revolve around that. And maybe this is just because I have limited training in Judo but to get in close, it seems like you take a chance on getting clawed, bitten, hell even someone attempting to grab ahold of your groin area which would probably be the end of you if they get the right grip. I'm not down with facial scars . But say theres 3 people surrounding you, and they're bigger, very tough, and like to throw down. Once again this may be because of limited training in Judo but it would seem like all that stuff goes out the window when 3 people coming at you from all angles throwing strikes and trying to wrestle you to the ground. In a situation like that what makes sense to me is to create distance, actually start running away and seperate all the attackers from each other. Turn around then strike, create more distance and strike again. Of course you better be one for cardio excercises if you plan on using this tactic, but still just assuming the worst Judo doesn't seem like the best bet. Maybe 1 on 1 but unfortunately alot of real situations aren't fair.

In TKD, they don't even let you punch to the face, only kick. That's retarded, because in a real life situation, you're going to be hit in the face, and if they're not treaching you to block to fhe face, it does you NO good whatsoever. TKD is mainly about fancy stuff, that's it.

Where do you get this info from?

I think you are talking about WTF Taekwondo, which is only an olympic sport. ITF style allows blows to the head and face.

Do you take Judo at the moment. If you don't any sort of instructional book highlighting adapting judo throws without a gi would be absolutely useless if you havent even learnt the throws with the gi in the first place.
If you do take judo then the answer is i don't know of any to be honest. Best bet is it ask your instructor if they will train an extra session with no gi. if not find a different club and ask if they train gi only.
What do you want to train no gi for? Is it self defence or strictly MMA? If its self defence then gi throws can be adapted easily. Most people have some for of clothing on for you to grab. Not only this the chokes can be aplied nicely with someone wearing just a T shirt or a light shirt/jacket. Katah ha jimme is a killer.

Mate if you are facing 3 people then run like F***! Don't stand and bang it out with them unless there is no other option. DON'T go to ground or you will have pieces kicked off you. Best bet is to flank so you always keep them in line with eachother. IE they don't get the opportunity to surround you. If one is talking to you and his friend movs to your right then flank the person talking to his right hence putting the two of them in a straight line. Then don't think act. Hit the first one pre-emptively and then you are in a much better position to deal with the other. make sure your first hit is a devastating shot that carries KO power.
Judo is a backup system for me when in close. My primary tools are striking with open hands to the head. Best form of defence is attack. Hit first and keep hitting til there is f*ck all to hit. When facing multiples and in the S*** just hit anything and everything that moves. Bites, gouge, rip. Be very very nasty
