Put it this way, they are not essential.
You need strength you can use if you are training for a sport, Isolating specific muscles and piling loads of weight on them during the lifts is at best over kill and at worse going to limit your speed and therefor power.
I'm trying to find a video of a good UFC fighter's weight routine, if weights work for you it's the type of route you should follow, bear with me...![]()

The secret of punching hard and accurate is simple in Boxing dont move your head. at first that sounds crazy, also if you want to avoid punches and not get hit dont move your Head. think about it.
