Hulk, in total agreement with you on Merchant. He put his foot in his large mouth during the David Diaz fight. Had him all but lost and then Diaz coldcocks the other guy in the last round. Time for Merchant to go. Lazy, doens't do any research, senile and deep down, I don't think he really cares much for boxers. No "top" announcer should ever rfer to a fighter as a "tomato can." Fans and writers, yes. Announcers, no. IMO

One of the nice things about America is that we can be totally American and still take pride and some identity from our other heritage. Considering that Boston and the surrounding area is LOADED with Irish-Americans and for that matter, Irish ex-pats, it's a fair nickname and smart marketing.

I think if Ward had gotten better training early on he could have been and true contender and not a journeyman as it turned out. I think if Gatti and Ward were the same age Ward schools Gatti 2 out of 3. Ward was 7 years older for god sakes. I wish I could see that fight with both of them @ the age of 28. Ward brought a much needed breath of fresh air into the sport. Gatti and him were made for each other like no other fighters ever have been

    Because they were both primed.

Gatti and Ward had a good trilogy but it consisted of this

A match with Gatti dominating early and getting rocked.. and then almost getting stopped in a round and then they talk about the round before the last in which they call it a slugfest when ut was more or less Gatti getting pummeled and then coming back with body shots at the end of the round. The second fight was a masterful boxing performance by Gatti which he dominated Ward. The third fight was Gatti dominating Ward with a broken hand and being knocked down.

I love that trilogy because it can show how great a shift in style is.

But imo the two fighters meant for each other is neither Bow Holyfield of Gatti and Ward

    it was Corrales and Castillo.

    CC.
To be quite honest I don't think Ward gets the props that Gatti gets for that trilogy and your right most of the conversations evolving around the trilogy lean towards or end up as Gatti conversations.
I will say it might have to do with that whole, broken arm, swolen face, down on the canvas thing that tends to happen when Gattin fights.
Just a thought, but good point on your part.

I had wondered why he always wears green, carries a pig under his arm and goes on about potatoes.
