He has skills and to be fair has tried to make big fights on occasion but they have fallen through because of Hopkins greed and because Calzaghe always busts his hand when making a fight with Glenn Johnson. More big fights should have been made by now though. He has the tools to beat the best.

As for Mayweather. Yes, he has beaten a lot of decent fighters. Fewer so in recent years. Gatti and Baldomir spring readily to mind. Yes, Hatton gets flack for fighting paper champs too these days! Like Calzaghe he has tremendous skills but seems to have skimmed through divisions recently without ever really leaving his impact. Im impressed he is fighting Oscar. But I do think Oscar is almost mummified and will get shown up somewhat.

Both are very skilled fighters, both could have done a bit more than they have in recent years, Calzaghe moreso...
Well I compare because Joe is gonna be 36 next month and is almost done with his career and the book is pretty much been written for his career

Floyd is gonna be 30 in a few days and is hitting stride for his prime and has already done more and has fought the better competition..
So you are comparing them because Joe is getting old and nearly retired, and because you are championing Floyd Mayweather!? Again, I dont really see your comparison.

Congrats on a very impartial threat, JT!!

In the UK you either like Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton or a one of several lesser known fighters.
I think it is futile to like a fighter just because of his nationality. Other aspects play their part for me. And that is why James Toney and Barrera have been such favourites of mine. I couldnt care less where they are born, that is irrelevant to me. Its got to be about the style or something about the fighter themselves.

But I am still a bit confused by this thread though. Why the need to compare Calzaghe and Mayweather. They get their share of critisism. Isnt that what this was about?

Gotdam you miles!!!! I wish I could take that coolclick back seriously that couldnt be farther from the truth.. I like Calzaghe and was very anxious to see him fight Bika so I could get a glimpse into his talent, just like I am anxious to see him put on a clinic and showcase his talent against Manfredo... I wish it was against better competition thats all

Yep behind Jeff Lacy I am a huge Mayweather Fan and I admit that 1000000000000000000% but I tried to take fandom out of this and wanted to focus on the scrutiny and desparity between the opinions on these 2 fighters...

OK if Joe is getting criticized it is fairly recently..... Floyd gets 10x the amount of flack thats my point..

and if Joe has been getting shafted around here more than I have noticed than I really have to pay better attention

I doubt you'd fine an American who likes Calzaghe or Hatton better than one of their own.  Why look overseas for a favorite when you have plenty of homegrowns to choose from?  Same goes for Latino fans.  Why cheer for Hatton when you can root for Cotto.

I think it is natural to lean toward you countrymen.  I don't watch the Olympics and cheer for China.  I don't hate China.

As boxing fans we apprciate boxers from around the world.  They all carry our sport.  Still, when you have a limited list of fighters to stand behind as a nation they seem all the more great.

I think the truth is that Calzaghe should have fought much better opposition over the years. As simple as that, coming from this Calzaghe fan...

As for Mayweather my only complaint is that I wish he would have unified more belts instead of jumping up in weight so quickly. Floyd is way over Calzaghe P4P of course. I argue as a fan of Floyd that I would have liked to have seen him clean out divisions. I dont argue this because I dont think he is good, likewise my thoughts on Calzaghe. I would dearly love him to fight Kessler, and it pisses me off that he doesnt....

Both fighters have their critics, but Floyd is P4P number for a reason, of course his record is comparatively better and substantially so when compared with Calzaghes....

Perhaps you are right and many would be inclined to agree with your thoughts on nationalism, but those are not the reasons why I watch boxing. A game of football, fair enough, but boxing to me is more about the individual than the country. Of course, I wanted Tyson to rip Danny Williams up...little did I know!

Bet you can't find a thread about Calzaghe that hasn't degenerated into a shitfest about how overrated he is etc...

    It all boils down to...

    1) Floyd Mayweather is THOUGHT TO BE the most gifted pugilist walking the planet today. He's held to a higher standard

    2) Prior to the Lacy fight, Joe C really wasn't talked about much in the American boxing media. Mayweather has been scrutinized for years.

    3) Mayweather runs off at the mouth about being the GOAT, which opens him up to criticism. It's also a fkking joke considering the good, but not great opposition he's faced. Look at who the rest of the top 5 P4P have fought compared to Mayweather. And this lil sumbitch really needs to keep names like SRR and Ali out of his mouth.

    4) Joe C is fun to watch. The casual fan goes to fights to see knockouts and beatdowns. That's not what you're gonna get from Mayweather above 135.
