Gonna go and see it, working part time in a cinema till I get my self on the Registered Exercise Profesional list so it's kind of hard to get worked up over films coming out...

Rocky was good, just seen Hot Fuzz... best film I've seen in a while, this looks really good.

comes out at the end of the month... along with Mr. Bean the Movie...

Mr. Bean the Movie. Couldn't thought of a more stereotypical British comedy if I tried That's cool about workin at the theater though, are you going to become a personal trainer or w/e? Always thought that was a cool profession.

Yeah, almost qualified to work in gyms doing general training, want to do general training and work with athletes ultimatly.

The cinema is pretty cool... get on well with most of the people there... not just work freinds, if I'd met them outside of work I'd be mates with them too... get some late finishes 10/12:30/2am... fucking my sleep pattern up a bit and it's hard to get into the gym at the moment but things are going good

Sorry guys, but I am going to be a bit anal here.

I was really looking forward to this film as the battle of Thermopylae was an absolute crucial event in the history of the Western democracies. There would have been no Britain or US without that battle.

The Greeks were a series of feuding city-states (Athens was democratic, but none of the others were. In fact Sparta was a fucking inhuman place that practiced institutionalised paedophilia, genocide, forced conscription, brutal laws and hardship. Cool)

Persia was the single largest superpower on the planet. The King, Xerxes, decided to expand his empire and marched to Greece with something like A MILLION strong army (only about a quarter were combat troops though, as logistics etc were all involved) In fact he could have mustered an army of over 10 million but saw this as a brief skirmish.

The Spartans were famous for their brutal and efficient hoplite fighting, in which they fought hand to hand with great discipline in phalanxes. The Persian army split and a smaller part of it was heading through the straits of Isthmus to invade Greece through a land bridge. The Spartans sent 300 finest volunteers to what they knew was a suicide mission. They were reinforced by some 3000 other troops from other Greek cities. When they heard that a second part of the Persian Army was threatening Athens, their King Leonidas sent all the other troops home and resolved to hold out against the Persians to the last man.

Amazingly, they held out for some three days, causing great casualties to the Persians, before they were outflanked and cut down. They fought seriously bravely.

BUT, the Persians won the battle, impaled Leonidas and advanced into Greece. Eventually the Babylonions (Baghdad) revolted and King Xerxes left to subdue them (a measure of how important his conquest of Greece really was to him)

Interesting how THE world superpower invaded a small motley country to restore order, was faced by suicide troops and eventually withdrew!!!! Those that fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

Anyway, I saw the trailer ............ this is an amazing story, great courage and brutality, history-turning in its importance and yet Hollywood choose to make the King 10 feet tall, put monsters in the Persian Army and reinvent history.

I really think that the real truth is a greater story and would have made a better fim that just being a pale remake of Gladiator meets Lord of the Rings.

Anyway, rant over.

It's just a comic book interpretation of the battle. Not really Hollywood so much as Frank Miller. It's going to be more like Sin City meets Gladiator then it is anything else. And Sin City kicked ass.

x I myself would have rather liked to see a historically accurate version of this battle but lets face it how many times does that happen in hollywood? Also I think that its got monsters and shit in there cause it's based on a comic book, not the actual battle of theramopyle, and I butchered the spelling there. Still gonna watch this and hopefully enjoy it.

I love Wiki but that day i just wasn't in the mood. I just didn't have that funny absorbant feeling i get sometimes

Usually if im on Wiki i end up on something history related (probably becuase it takes me a hole day to read the original page i search for as im forever clicking through to other stuff i dont understand on the way and i end up going back back back).

It is an ok action movie:

Plus: + color contrasts are put very nicely
+ They put on nicely the Spartan mentality
+ They did introduce a few tasty and apparently historically true quotes (tonight we dines in hell and referring to the deluge of arrows "then we'll fight in the shadows)
+ action scenes are quite good


Minus: + historically many many flaws
+ Xerces looks like a S&M dude instead of a King
+ If you see the movie in hD, you can see the flaws in the special effects
+ they shouldn't have put some stupid shit like the mutant giant on the Persian side that have nothing to do with the battle.

I thought this film was more homoerotic than Brokeback Mountain. Plus it's historical accuracy was hideous. The Spartans were one of the most disgusting societies in history.

Although I guess 300 paedophiles standing up to the progressive empire built upon foundations of truth & justice wouldn't have made the best film adaptation
