I used to run a lot and couldn't get past that but overdid it. Now I'm beginning to learn the importance of balancing everythin like others have already said here. Resistance work and cardio.
I like swimming in a club, racing 50 m or even only 25 m butterfly hard enough gets an all over bodyworkout that has my toes and fingers tingling from lack of O2 by the end! And no jarring etc. Good to have an instructor teach all the strokes as it balances out a lot of the muscles. Do have to be careful not to overwork shoulders though - as Chris has told me before.
As another aerobic alternative I find mounting my racing bike on a windtrainer with very little resistance works well. I wear my heart rate monitor and do timed intervals forcing my heart rate up to about 180 bpm for the hard parts. It's not fun - boring going nowhere and racing noone - but at least feel like I've done something at the end.
Also like the exercises and stretches etc Scrap puts up. CC on the balls one BTW Scrap.
