The “World Cup” of boxing between the Philippines and Mexico which is scheduled to take place at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California on August 11 has won commendation from respected Ring Magazine editor-in-chief Nigel Collins.
Collins told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that as far as he is concerned “the value of the so-called World Cup is based solely on the quality of the fights and the fighters involved.”
He said the August 11 card has two “very good matches” in the WBO bantamweight title fight between reigning champion Jhonny Gonzalez and former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa and the WBO super bantamweight clash between champion Daniel Ponce De Leon and emerging Filipino ring sensation, undefeated Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista.
The card includes world-rated super flyweight Z ”The Dream” Gorres who was clearly robbed of a decision against WBO champion Fernando Montiel in Cebu last February and is now seeking a crack at the IBF title takes on dangerous Gerson Guerrero while world rated Bert Batawang faces Francisco Rosas in an IBF light flyweight eliminator.
Promising teenaged prospect AJ “Bazooka” Banal makes his second US appearance against former WBC light flyweight champion Eric Ortiz who now fights as a super flyweight while Philippine bantamweight champion Michael Domingo crosses mitts with undefeated Miguel Roman.
The Ring Magazine editor-in-chief said “I would encourage fans to support it” although he said the Cup itself which costs $500,000 and is encrusted with tiny diamonds and sapphires is “mere window dressing.”
