Wing Chun does have some interesting defensive applications, though. But you're right - it isn't a strong offensive style. It's essentially aimed at a smaller, weaker person defending themselves from a larger, stronger one.

The biggest problem with WC is (from everything I know) that it centers around a lot of throat strikes and eye gouges, which you can't really practice in real life scenarios, seeing as you'd blind/kill your opponent....you'd be much better off training boxing, and using that to help you gouge eyes and whatnot.
Boxing is like a handjob, and MMA is like a hot sweaty orgy with 5 chicks. I could never say no to a handjob, but which would you rather have?

yeah, and you don't need a blackbelt from a con artist to gouge eyes and hit throats.

maybe ill start charginf $100/month to teach kids to bite.

Actually, it was developed by a woman - do defend against bigger, heavier men.

sorry love, do't b'leeve ya. if you want sound striking principles, nothing out does the grand dadday of 'em all... boxing.
which bit don't you believe? that mt doesn't have sound striking? Striking is not just punching y'know. Eat knee you mutha.

    & bcollins is correct.

Someone really versed in Wing Chun is harder to hit than Floyd Mayweather on speed. I got to train a couple of times with a guy that had trained with someone really good - you know how that goes - and I couldn't begin to get past him. He was slippery as an eel. He showed us some basic chi sao that I always thought was cool as hell.

But if you wanna go out and knock someone into next week, both boxing and MT are great places to look. Two of the best striking MAs, IMO.

no, not mt you spanner... the wc being a good foundation. WC'ers never do anything legit. Everything is staged against passive students who've been brainwashed into not making their "master" look bad. all WCers claim its lethalness. uh huh. when's the last time a wc master killed anyone? oh. that's right. never.

i want to see a fight between and wc grand master and any pro boxer, even some scrub who's got a losing record on $400 fights. I'll be the house on the boxer. WC is good for nothing but mall demonstrations and conning people out of their money and then telling people how you could kill them or knock them flying 6feet across the room by hitting them in the chest form 2" away.

Wow...somebody seems to have a personal vendetta against WC :P

I do have to say...from some of the videos I've seen, the defensive skills of WC guys and handspeed are pretty phenomenal.

However, I have seen the same thing from my former trainer (Kyokushin Karate) with the sticky hands-esque technique that the WC guys generally use to demonstrate their defensive skills. Having also done it myself, it's a lot easier to defend when you can feel their movement, rather than having to rely purely on vision like in a real fight.

And also, the "rolling punch" as I call it (essentially where you kinda swat down their guard very quickly and follow up immediately with a strike....it almost looks like you're rolling your fists as you do it) has NEVER worked in a real sparring session the few times I tried it, despite being so successful while training.

I'm just tired of hearing how deadly they are when in reality it's a load of shit.... full of examples like you mention...the rolling punch. whatever. that might work on a little girl. MIGHT.

I never said wc was a good foundation you tool, re-read what I wrote, it applies similar principles of movement as Judo, using your opponents momentum against them. How is economy of motion and not telegraphing your intent not sound? And it IS a cornerstone of JKD, however as with all systems it has flaws and JKD altered it. So you don't swat their guard down quickly and strike, the block and strike happen together but your mentallity is focused on the strike (repeatedly, fast and hard) and I have used that in sparring and it does work. Mismatched leads they jab, you ram your jab across their forearm.
