    Here, this should help

If there is one thing I know, it is that true gladiators have an 80's perm
    Good lord! lol!

Also reminds me of the rock band "poison". You have to look like a chick to attract chicks.

Most boxing fans don't HAVE to see a knockout in order to be entertained where as the losing gladiator had to be killed for the crowds satisfaction (reasom rome finally collapsed is basically because it was more interested in watching the deaths of its citizens as opposed to concentrating on fighting off its enemies which it was surrounded by).

Winning gladiators got the best of life: Money, fame, and virtually anything else they wanted. Boxers (and pro athletes in general) today receive about the same benefits.

Sure there's technique for stabbing someone with a sword, but boxing has a much more technical aspect to it than just shear brutality.

Boxers usually hug and converse after a fight where as there was only one galdiator left after a fight.

They have similarites and differences but when you put it into perspective, boxing is nowhere near as barbaric as the gladiator times. People who want boxing banned because its too "violent" are ignorant of the sport. Killing isn't a sport, boxing is.
Actually gladiators were not killed nearly as much as people think. They were expensive commodities and more often then not faked their deaths using their equivalent of movie tricks like using sheep's blood and such.

There were a lot of deaths though, mostly criminals made to fight lions and other wild animals. And of course many, many Christians.

I suspect that years from now boxers will have full body armor or padding and will look back at the days went those crazy fighters use to go out there with out even wearing head gear. Maybe thousands of years from now there will be no contact sports whatsoever. Society evolves and most of what we do now will eventually seem primitive or even barbaric.
I believe that the assumption that society always "evolves" for the better is crap. People get angry. Fast working "you'll get evreything now" technology will significantly decrease the pateince people have when they actually have to "work" for something. Now with all that stress built up what are you gonna do with it? Get a highscore on a videogame? That'd be all fine and good except for that fact that hundreds and thousands of years from now, we'll still be human. There hasn't been a decade since our existance that hostility wasn't present between one group of people or another. We're at the future. Society has hit its current peak unless a group of wise men get together to rework everything.

Actually a much more close comparison could be drawn between modern boxers and greek combatants of around the same era. They took part in boxing contests utilising "casetas" i believe they were called, which were a wrap worn on the hand. These "wraps," consisted of leather straps with stones or metal knuckle peieces inserted in order to inflict the maximum potential damage upon the adversary. I'm sorry i haven't read much about them lately so i can't elaborate any farther but i'll have a look in some books later.
