What if Trinidad losses against Jones Jr? Will he go into retirement again?

Tito is one of those older fighters who's caught in a bind. On one hand, he can't make lower weights anymore, and as a result, he must fight in higher weight classes where he can't be as effective.
Tito had skills, but in the end he was always a KO puncher, and those types of fighters can't move up in weight successfully like pure boxers can. I expect Jones to beat Tito handily, and to be honest I can't see Tito beating any quality fighter at 160 or above.

In all of Tito losses he was pretty much outclassed and i think he is only taking this fight for another big pay day so i think if he losses will pretty much ride off into the sunset again i don't even believe he even really wants to fight now.

I believe he will retire if he loses. Which is sad and will be another blow to his legacy and to his fans like myself.

It is really hard to tell what his motivation is these days. He does not need the money as far as I can tell. Have not heard any rumors here at PR that Tito has any wild expenses. But, to be honest, how would I know.

He might be genuanly giving it another shot. But if that is the case then why make his first fight against such a dangerous opponent 20+ lbs over his best weight?

I sometimes think that this is actually a brilliant move to fight a highly recognizable name who has recently had issues with his chin in order to get a fast pass to another title shot or lucrative pay check. If this is the case than a loss would crumble his hopes and he will retire.

But I also think that this is more simple than that. Tito has always wanted to fight Jones. Jones was what DLH was to Mayweather. It was his goal to get to Jones and prove that he was better. He never made it that far. Now that Jones is down, Tito sees a chance to fight him again so he took it. As simple as that. If this is the case than he might just retire regardless of whether he wins or loses.

If he loses he'll fight some also-ran to 'save face' and then retire. Somebody who can take a punch so he has to work up a sweat but who won't give him too much trouble.

don't see why this fight is happening in the first place, but yea if Tito would have gone back to 160, there were plenty of big fights he could have been going for, if i was handling him, i'd put him in a big fight off the bat, and would have done it right here in PR, in el coliseo Roberto Clemente, Felix "Tito" Trinidad vs. Edison "el pantera" Miranda, Miranda although from Colombia resides in PR and well he does have a bit of a following here, and style wise it's a perfect fight for Tito to get his confidence back and to cause a big splash, something like Mayorga, just a harder hitter, then if he won, i'd move him along against someone with a name but not a huge threat like a John Duddy, which a win over him would bring attention just cause of Duddy's 0 (even if it's a bit padded), then start putting him in the bigger fights, the title fights against the likes of Sturm and Abraham (i think Tito's name alone would be enough to draw both to the US, just cause it's pretty much a guarantee that they're gonna get good $$$), well if he wins well he's got a title again, and then finally fight either Pavlik or Taylor, which IMO a fight against either would be a 50/50, cause they have the perfect stye for him, stand and trade, even Taylor who at times boxes, if he gets hit he starts to trade, and sorry i don't think neither Wright or Hopkins have anything on Trinidad's power and they both shook Taylor up, so if he gets whacked clean by a Trinidad left hook he'd be in trouble, last if he wins against either (and that's if), he could go on and take Wright again (although i think he'd still lose the rematch i think it would be a closer fight than the first).

Tito probably should have stayed retired before getting back in with Mayorga and Winky. But hey - if he still wants to fight, why not? It's his call.

As long as he handles himself well against RJJ - which I bet he will - I wouldn't be too surprised to see him and Oscar go at it again. There would be a lot of money in that one, even if they are both long in the tooth now. The average fan would buy into it - at a healthy PPV price

Win or Lose he would probably retire until someone convinces him $$$$ to come back.
A win would most likely speed up the process. IMO, business wise the RJJ is a great fight for him. Everyone is expecting him to lose so many options are still available even with a loss not to mention his payday from the fight.

Point is, I've seen a lot of good and well-expressed points on this thread. I myself wish I knew the answer to the question about whether Tito will retire again if he loses to Jones Jr. As to why Tito's coming back at all, I was in the process of listing some of the factors I believe may be involved, to some degree or another, in Tito's decision. There would be, in no particular order:

a. Tito's love of the fight game. Few fighters ever looked like they loved to fight as much as Tito. His smile and demeanor as he came into the ring, as well as how much he enjoyed all the pageantry surrounding his fights, is something a lot of us fans miss a lot.

b. He feels he's still got a lot left in the tank. Tito's never been savagely beaten up. Even in his two lopsided losses, to Hopkins and Winky, Tito didn't suffer as much physically as other boxers do in their fights. Matter of fact, Tito may have taken more punishment during his KO win over Vargas than in any other of his fights.

c. He misses the attention. Hey, he might even be a little bit jealous of the attention that Cotto is now getting. It's only natural. Not that he needs to be. Tito's place in boxing history and in the hearts of boxing fans in Puerto Rico and the world over is secure, IMO. But I put myself in his shoes, and hell... I'd probably be a bit jealous myself.

d. Money. Who wouldn't want an extra 20 million in his bank account?

e. Not leaving with a loss. Maybe he doesn't want his loss to Winky to be his last fight. Maybe he wants to leave on his own terms, with a win. Wouldn't blame his for that, either, although, IMO, he's got nothing left to prove. He's a future HOF, an ATG, and doesn't need to come back.

Finally, one thing I don't agree with is the argument about what losing to Jones Jr. and retiring would do to his legacy. IMO, a boxer's record accumulated throughout the years, is what speaks about his legacy. Did Ali's legacy diminish because he fought a couple of fights too many and ended up the way he is? Did SRL's legacy suffer after HE retired and un-retired a couple of times? What boxer (other than Marvin Hagler) hasn't retired, only to come back for another go? Boxing is hard to get out of your blood. And for someone like Tito, who always loved to fight, it must be even harder. So will his legacy be affected if he loses to Jones Jr. and goes back into retirement? IMO... no.

Good question I think. I mean who else can Felix fight? I think a rematch with Fernando Vargas would be good except they both might be past their primes and Vargas is doing his last dance with Mayorga. Trinidad vs. Hopkins in a rematch hmmmm I never personally seen the fight but they say it was pretty much one sided. The Winky Wright vs. Felix Trinidad was defitely one sided as I think I only gave the most 3 rounds to Trinidad. So wow, if he losses and is trying to fight another big name well I don’t see anybody who people might actually want see him go against.

I don't know... May be you are right when you say that Tito does not want to fight. That may explain why he started training 2 months before even having the fight with Jones signed. All that enthusiasm clearly show that he does not want to fight.

One thing is clear, Tito is really motivated to fight, I don't know if he will win this fight, but he is training very hard and should be in good shape. The problem is that Tito is going to a weight division that will be very difficult for him.
