Who can Tito spar with though to prepare him for Jones ?? there is no one who has an awkward style like Jones or anyone as fast as Jones at Lightheavyweight that could prepare him for Jones.Originally Posted by SweetPea
Obviously, there's no one who's exactly like Jones. But you can't get more opposite than Jones and Cotto.Originally Posted by Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker
Jones is fighter who doesn't jab, doesn't throw to the body. Cotto's whole attack is based around jabbing and going to the body.
Cotto almost always comes forward. Jones, at this stage of his career, spends most of the fight moving backwards or laying on the ropes to rest.
Im not trying to justify Cotto as a sparring partner im just saying who is there at Lightheavyweight that can prepare him for Jones ?? no one imo.Originally Posted by SweetPea

It took Tito 3 yrs to win his 1st title, it took Cotto 3 yrs to win his 1st title.
Titos a 3 division champ, Cottos already a 2 division champ.
IMO in order for Cotto to be as good or even better then Tito he needs the big names PBF, Margarito, Cintron, Williams.
If they move up in weight Hatton, Witter and possible rematches with Paulie & Torres since both of those guys gave Cotto a very good fight.
Personally...I hate the comparison.Originally Posted by Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker
Cotto has proven that he's a far better fighter than Tito...it's just the marketability that's the problem.
Tito is a brighter star than Cotto is...& in the end...that's that, for me. Now I realize that Tito fans are gonna go apeshit...but sit down & watch Cotto from start to current finish. He's the better boxer all the way around. He's far more superior at this moment...& Cotto's still improving & far from his peak.
That's almost scarey.
When I say that I hate the comparison...I'm being as sincere as I can be. I think that Cotto's got twice the potential...& less than half the personality.
It's unjust to compare them...unjust & unfair...to both fighters.
While Tito pales in comparison to Cotto, IWHO, now & then...he was a great fighter who was just that...a fighter...& not a boxer. Again, this is only my opinion...take it or leave it...I know that many will not agree...but the facts are the facts & Cotto proved against Mosley that he could & would be able to hang with legitamately equipped boxers.
The exact opposite of Trinidad, IWHO.
So in answer to your question...Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was??
Again...I say that he already is.
Can he be as beloved & famous as Tito was?
No...I don't think so. He's popular...but mostly in Puerto & New York.

Cotto COULD eventually prove to be the better fighter. I don't see how anyone could say he's clearly better yet.
I think that he's far more dynamic than Tito ever was.Originally Posted by SweetPea
Based on performances against Judah & Mosley to only name a couple of players.

I agree. Tito's record was tainted a bit because of his losses to winky and BHOP, but at 147 i think Titio would give Cotto hell. He is arguably one of the hardest punchers ever at that weight.Originally Posted by SweetPea
I dont see Cotto beating prime oscar, vargas, mayorga, and KTFO 160 champ joppy.
And i cannot see cotto making 15 defenses at 147.
I think Wacko means he is less one dimensional than Tito was, Cotto has shown us arrange of boxing skills, like fighting on the back foot and countering, switching southpaw, using his jab etc.Originally Posted by SweetPea
Where as Tito never had a plan b.
More dynamic than Tito's performances at 147, his fight with Vargas at 154, and his destruction of Joppy at 160?Originally Posted by wacko3205
Exactly...& I really don't think that that's such a hard think to see if you take off the rose tinted glasses when it comes to Trinidad.Originally Posted by Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker
Oscar, Hopkins, & Wright all made Trinidad look confused...& quite honestly...Hopkins made him look silly...ridiculous.
Cotto is a much more well rounded boxer than Trinidad ever was.

Rose-colored glasses for Trinidad isn't the issue. Cotto is one of my favorite fighters.Originally Posted by wacko3205
Do you think prime Winky and prime Hopkins, both at 160, would not clearly beat Cotto as well? I sure think they would.
As I said before...I think that Cotto's far more superior at this moment...& Cotto's still improving & far from his peak.Originally Posted by SweetPea
Cotto has only just arrived at 147...so as I stated...at this moment...I consider him to be the better boxer based on what he's already done. Yes.
Haven't see him at either one of those weights...unless you factor in what he undiciplinly weighed against Corley.
I honestly don't believe that Cotto would be really effective at 160lbs...but neither was Tito.
I just think that Cotto's a hell of a lot more well rounded & if he get's in with a skilled boxer, like he did with Mosley, he won't get pressed like a pair of cotton slacks as Trinidad did against Wright...who owned him with a jab & the same 1-2 combo all night long. Nor do I feel that he will buckled under the pressure like a belt as he did against Hopkins.
Cotto has been thrown in with some speedy skilled boxers & has surprised even his most debdicated fans...as I am proud to admit.
While it may be hard for you to see what I am trying to get at...it's just under the surface...one that Cotto has yet to even scratch...but it's there. Plain to see.
Cotto can, has, & will be great.

OK, it's probably best that we agree to disagree. Because while I'll agree that Cotto has the potential to get better (and be better than Tito), I just do not see how he can, at his point in his career, already be considered a better fighter than someone (Tito) who will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.Originally Posted by wacko3205
