But this thread is about MEGA-fights, and Cotto-Margarito is not even close to being that type of fight, because 99% of people in the US have no clue who Antonio Margarito is. That might not even be a PPV fight.
There is no way that fight is not a PPV event. Margarito should be pretty well known by now. He's been around the top of the division longer than any of the other welters.

I understand when you say it won't be a MEGA event in the way DLH - Mayweather or Hatton - Mayweather. But I think it will be as big as say Taylor - Pavlik or Calzaghe - Kessler.

Calzaghe vs. Kessler was the lowest rated HBO World Championship Boxing event in a while (maybe ever?) and it wasn't even a PPV. I'm sure it was pretty big in the UK, though.

As for Cotto's "mega-fight," if Cotto was a big enough name that had all of this recognition with the non-hard core fan, it WOULD HAVE BEEN a mega fight because we all know that Shane Mosley is a pretty big draw.

Think about it, Mayweather vs. Mosley would probably be 2nd only to Mayweather vs. Delahoya. Delahoya vs. Mosley would be huge, as well. Mosley vs. J. Taylor (would absolutely have to be at a catch weight) would also have been a big fight in terms of $$$.

Cotto needs to establish himself with a couple more big wins, stay at the top of boxing for a long while, and avoid fighting guys like Alfonso Gomez before he has the slightest chance of being anywhere near the level of a big money fighter

Did i just see one of you guys call Miguel Cotto a legend? Maybe i need to start wearing glasses cause i know i just didn't read what i thought i read. I will show you my definition of a legend.

Don't like him but delahoya, legend
Arrogant asshole Mayweather Jr. soon to be legend.
    Sugar Ray leonard legend
    Marvin Hagler legend
    Felix Tito Trinidad legend
Miguel Cotto is a good but will lose within the next year in half and will be badly exposed.

I wouldn't count on it. Cotto is under Bob Arum and Arum is keeping his cash cow safe with guys like Alfonso Gomez and the ultimate hype machine, Antonio Margarito. Arum knows that Margarito is nothing but hype and if he doesn't cash out on him soon, Margo will lose to some 4th tier fighter. So what better way to cash out on Margo than feeding him to Cotto (who is a damn good fighter, but not elite) and calling it a big fight.

There is no chance in hell that Arum puts Cotto in the ring with Paul Williams. We all remember the Margarito vs. Williams fight and that almost ruined Arum's money making ability with Margarito, which is why he set his next fight with Golden "WTF?" Johnson. There is also no way that Arum puts Cotto in with Mayweather until he has absolutely maxed Cotto's money making factor because he knows that Mayweather will make Cotto look very average.

Margarito is well-known to boxing fans.

This is my whole point.... what makes a megafight different from a regular fight is that a megafight captures the attention of the general public, not just the hardcore boxing crowd. Mayweather-De La Hoya was a megafight, because it wasn't just boxing fans who were sitting in front of the TV watching it. It was regular people who hadn't ordered a fight in years, and even people who had never ordered a fight in their entire lives.

There are only two fighters right now who have name recognition among the American population, and that's De la Hoya and Mayweather. The average person on the street doesn't have a clue who Antonio Margarito is, and they never will.

Cotto-Margarito could be a PPV fight, but I'm not certain that it will be. Margarito isn't as well-known as Mosley or Judah.

Unfortunately, I do not believe he will get a shot at Mayweather or DLH until 2009 which sucks, but hopefully he will get fights with Margarito, Williams, Cintron, etc.

Cotto vs Margarito (assuming they both win their next fight) will be a WW unification bout between two top 5 welters. This is enough to be a big fight.

Cotto vs Williams would also be big for the same reasons.

I do fear, however, that if Cotto does fight Margarito and Williams this year there is a very high probability that he will lose his 0 before he gets his shot at Mayweather.

    I could be wrong though..
Just curious: how would these guys beat Cotto? what do they have to beat him?
