No they can't use that excuse for a few reasons, 1 Calzaghe had to drain himself to make the Super Middleweight limit. He has stated that he feels much stronger at Light Heavyweight because he does not have to starve himself. And 2 Hopkins is the one that started at a lower weight class not Calzaghe.
