Cool Re: Greatest Thing I've Seen From a Ref

[QUOTE=match;507137]This is the Terry Norris-John Mugabi fight. I don't know what this ref's name is but he should be given every big fight. Mugabi get's dropped and barely beats the count and deliberately takes out his mouthpiece and drops it on the canvas, hoping the ref will pause the action and pick it up and send him to a neutral corner to have it washed off and put back in, and instead of falling for this age old con or stopping the fight to take a point away like most would do, this ref just looks at it on the ground and let's Mugabi get his @ss beat without it, classic:

Gosh, sorry to see you were banned. What'd he do?! I just happened to stumble on this. The referee you like is Eddie Eckert of South Florida. He was recently inducted in to the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame (Google it, I can't post links yet.)

He was a great referee for over 30 years, he's retired now. He is also my father. Thanks for the props.

    Keith Eckert

There was a remarkable convergence of power in the MW divisions of the 1990's. Both Norris and The Beast have to be among the top 10 hardest hitting LMW's of all-time. Then you had Julian Jackson, who was like the Earnie Shavers of these divisions. Add Gerald McClellan to the mix and I don't know if one could find 4 boxers of equivalent LB-4-LB power fighting at the same time.

They arrived just off the heals of the Hagler-Hearns-SRL-Duran era, so they were a little overshadowed. Roy Jones emerged around the same time but did not fight any of the above. Nigel Bell could pack a punch too.

Thats a lot of power in 1 and 1/2 a division over such a short timespan. I suspect the 4 mentioned first along with Hagler, Jones, and Hearns all deserve seats in the top 15 or maybe even top 10 all-time hardest hitting LMW-MW list.

Here is one bout wherein the referee is tougher than the boxers.

Joe Cortez during the Benn v Galvano in Italy rightly said Benn's punch that cut Mauro was legit and gave the title to Benn. Credit to him for that.
