Had to dig up this old thread when I saw it, Johnny Cash was the man!
Difficult for Americans to understand but Cash is a very 'American' artist. Whilst no doubt he's very popular Stateside he's not massively popular over here in the UK, the average man in the street would be hard pushed to name more than one track he did - if any!
That said I've been a fan since a boy, mostly because my Grandad used to listen to him. Hands down my favourite song he ever recorded though was Hurt, it doesn't matter that it's a cover - Cash made it his own. When Reznor wrote it no doubt it's meaning was something entirely different to Cash's interpretation, that only makes Cash's version stronger in my eyes.
I love his older stuff too. Folsom and Boy Named Sue are my Karaoke favourites, it's just a shame when I sing them nobody has a clue what they are!
I read his autobiography whilst backpacking across South America and his music was my soundtrack! Makes me proud in a way that one of his career highlights for him personally was playing Glastonbury here in England.
Fuck Elvis, Cash is King!
Yah man, Cash is an American Icon
Yah man, this is great, maybe his best cover. For original stuff, I like Delia's gone, as posted by PacStraightLeft.
Cash recorded a lot of duets with Bob Dylan in the late 60s. North Country is the only one that made it onto a studio album that I know of.

Then we have the following cover of a great old Dylan song written by Bob in 1962

Sorry there dude, I'm not a huge Elvis fan in all honesty.
Me and the ex girlfriend bought an Elvis Greatest Hits cd from Walmart when in the US on a road trip. Figured it would get us in the mood but I just couldn't get into him.
With the exception of Burning Love (which we had on repeat all the way from Veges to San Diego) and Suspiscious Minds I don't like anything he did.
All rather apt now I guess but whenever I hear Suspicious Minds on the radio it reminds me of my ex girlfriend. Cheating f***** heart breaking whore!!![]()

Wanted man is a great tune. The story goes that Bob Dylan wrote it for Johnny Cash. The lyrics are Dylanesque for sure. Dylan never recorded it himself, but he has performed it live a number of times over the years. Apparently there is a duet of him and Cash somewhere out there, but I could never find it.
