If we're talking next gen fighters yet to come up you have Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade...

He's gonna make a big splash when he enters the Pro ranks in a few years... Maybe sooner.

It won't be easy. ODLH won gold so right there he had exposure. Also, he's not a bad-looking guy either, has charisma, skills, kept KOing guys right from the start of the pros and started fighting big names since his 14th fight. Abner Mares seems to be going through the right path so far. He has even appeared on some shows like myth-busters. We'll see how it goes.

To become a superstar in America, you have to have the talent of course, you have to be an undefeated champion, and you have to have something outside of just boxing that can be marketed to the general public. Quite honestly, I don't consider Pavlik a true superstar yet. Let's not forget that he hasn't even carried a pay per view by himself yet. He's still on his way up and I think that his stardom ceiling is kinda low because he doesn't really have anything outside of boxing to market. He's great to watch but in terms of mainstream audiences knowing him, I just don't see it.

The biggest American stars of the last 15 years all had something that could be marketed in American society at the time:

Tyson - Unmatched violence and aura of invincibility in the ring that created huge interest and buzz. Held the most important title in the world. Trainwreck out of the ring that tabloids and TV loved to cover that took his celebrity to an unheard of level in boxing. Superstar.

De La Hoya - American Olympic gold medalist with a tragic story. Good looks brought a whole new demographic to boxing (women). Took on all challenges. Mingling with actors, singers, and high profile athletes increased his celebrity. Superstar.

Roy Jones Jr - Cried tears of disappointment at the Olympics after he was clearly screwed out of a gold medal. Probably, the most awe-inspiring fighter EVER to watch that constantly provided topics for watercooler conversation on Monday mornings. The person probably most responsible for popularizing the P4P term. Superstar.

Floyd Mayweather Jr - Olympic bronze medalist. The most technically gifted boxer to come along in the past 25 years. Probably, the most loud-mouthed and brash fighter to come along since Sugar Ray. Increased celebrity by capitilizing on American fascination with flashy, extremely egotistical, superstar athletes. People paid to see him win but more importantly people paid to see him lose. A true "villian". Superstar.

There is simply no other pro American boxer that comes to mind that has superstar qualities. Andre Berto has the talent and it looks like he's well spoken but I just don't get superstar from him. When I watched RJJ, Oscar, and Floyd in their formative years, I thought to myself, he's gonna be big one day. I don't get that from Berto. I think Andrade has a good chance to be a star because he's got the talent and he's already caused quite a bit of controversy (walking outta the ring before scores were announced at the Olympics) and he's not even pro yet. Andre Ward is another guy who I think can probably be a star because his gold medal and an undefeated record will take him to the cusp but his personality seems kinda drab.

I'm not really sure to be honest with you... I just feel he's not elite and has a belt.

Andre Berto and Sergio Mora are perfect examples of the state of the sport and how B level fighters can earn an A level reward... Cuz there's so many friggin belts... WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF...

It's irritating... Does Berto have skill and potential? Yes he does. He meets an elite welter he gets knocked back to earth from the cloud he's sitting on.

Just happened to bump into this thread that was recommended while I was in the other thread I made. Seems like most people were wrong about Berto. And if I was here when this thread was made, I would have thought Berto would be that next superstar also.

Too bad about Berto to and Kirkland. I thought they would be at the top as well. Kirkland seems to be content having half assed training and fighting schedule. I guess Berto is one dimensional and injury prone. All though quite a few have fallen short I think the US will continue to produce great boxers, I mean look at that guy Adrian Broner, you may not have heard about him yet but he is definitely the next Floyd, just ask him.
