I knew about Gatti & his issues with domestic violence long before this & I was suspicious in the back of my mind. As much as I don't want to see this said about Gatti, I was critical of articles about MJ that ignored his private life, so I've gotta have the same standards here.

If he had been seriously abusing her & I mean seriously, then she could be looking at manslaughter, which if he was would be fair, however I think it unlikely as it seems it was problems with booze & drugs that led to his vioulence. Also the descriptions are very vague. If he got drunk and/or high & hit her that is very different to getting angry & near beating her to death a la Chris Brown. I really disagree with hitting women & like to think I would never do it, but ANY man who says he's never even thought about it is lying.

On the other hand, Michael Marley, like all too many of the boxing media, is an unprofessional journalist who feeds on being controversial & 'edgy' rather than actually being any good (Steve Kim & Dougie Fischer also fit this mould nicely). It almost seems like he wants to justify Gatti's death, Gatti was probably rude to him in an interview & this is how the brave writer gets his own back

There are some women who are fiery enough to hit a man. One of my ex's once pulled my hair, scratched my face and then stabbed me just over the eye with a fork. She tried her hardest to get me to hit her when she was drunk. She was jealous to the extreme and tried her hardest for me to make her a victom. I never would and just would end up buying polyfill to fill the holes I would punch in the wall.

It does not excuse a guy hitting a girl, but they seemed to have an intense jealous relationship. He could have been a mean drunk, or she may have been like my ex Karen!

What I can say though is stabbling him in back of the head, and then strangling him to death while he was down, is pre-meditated. Compounding that is her being able to go to sleep and leave his body there for 10 hours, then calling the cops and trying to cover it up.

I seriously doubt she slept much if at all. Was he on vacation or did he live there now?

They were on vacation. From some news sources, apparently what happened was they got into a spat outside the nightclub, Gatti pushed her and she fell down, and then he hitched a cab with the baby to their rented condo and left her there. Why they had the baby at a nightclub I have no idea.

He then puts the baby down to sleep and passes out. She comes in later and kills him in his sleep.

That is what the Brazillian cops said anyway.

The drunken street fight in Pernambuco, Brazil, early Saturday morning between former world champion boxer Arturo Gatti and his wife, Brazilian native Amanda Carina Barbosa Rodrigues was not the first physical confrontation between the mutually hot tempered couple, sources tell Examiner.com

"They had problems in New Jersey and in Montreal," the sources said. "Their arguments were constant, about his drinking and drugging or him looking at other women and he would complain about her wearing scanty clothing. They were always arguing."

As if Gatti's murder isn't bad enough, this tale of domestic violence is starting to sound like the case of the late champion Diego "Chico" Corrales who went to prison for assaulting his then pregnant wife.

Corrales later died in a motorcycle accident in Las Vegas.

Police in the Northeastern Brazil seaside city have Gatti’s 23-year-old wife in custody and will charge her with premeditated murder for first stabbing the passed out boxer with a knife in the back of the head and, when that did not evidently kill him, strangling him with a purse strap.

“This wasn’t the first time they went at it physically,” someone who has known Gatti for many years said. “Gatti had been seen striking her in the past. He would be in a good mood but then the liquor and drugs would get to him and he would go off on her. She is also very high strung and she often accused him of cheating or just eyeballing other women.”

Brazilian police have discounted any other possible suspects in the case. Gatti was found on the floor, surrounded by blood, in a condo affiliated with a hotel.

The couple and their 10-month-old son had gone to Brazil for what some called “a second honeymoon.”

The couple had gone to a local bar Friday night and argued there. The argument began again on the street and the fighter punched his wife.

He returned to the posh condo with their baby son and evidently fell asleep.

When she returned to the condo apartment, Gatti's wife knifed him and then strangled him. Police found blood on the floor and are examining a bloody purse strap.

Gatti was 37 years old. He was born in Italy, grew up in Montreal and made Jersey City his boxing base.

Gatti had last been to Brazil to attend the 36th birthday party of former world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas.

Freitas told Brazilian media that Gatti had drug abuse problems and was talking about splitting up with his wife recently.

Sometimes it seems the less we know about the private life of some great fighters, the better it is.

Personally, I have never understood men hitting women for any reason let alone great ring warriors such as Corrales and Gatti doing so.

Of course, putting alcohol and drugs in the mix alters everything.

(Bloody purse strap photo, Globo TV Nordeste)

It amazes me that such macho men inside the ropes can be woman beaters outside the ring.

I hope that the word on Gatti is not revealed to be true but, like I said, it all fits into the incendiary mixture with drugs and liquor,

    Say it ain't so, Arturo

I have an experience like this with my ex wife. My ex pull a knife on me 2 times. The first one she actually attacked me but I luckily close the door & my cousin was there to calm her down. The second, I called 911 right away, that one scares the hell out of me. I never held a hand on my violent ex-wife, that's why I'm still alive.

This during the post partum era. I don't even know what Post Partum means then & it made me to researched on it. Post partum happens after a woman gave birth, they feel insecure that they become almost psychotic.

I never cheat my wife but she always thought I'm about to leave her. the second episode was triggered when she dug my storage & found my ex-GF pix still hanging in there.

I'm afraid the accused will use the line "I'm a battered wife and I acted in self defense".

I by no means condone this stuff but I find it funny if a man smacks a woman they are considered a wife beater. I mean really ? If Gatti was a wife beater don't you think her face would kind of be destroyed. My brother had a similiar charge against him were she told the judge my brother punched her in the face. She then showed him a little bruise on her cheek. The judge simply smiled and said Ms. so and so I know this man,he has fought in the ring before what leads me to believe if he hit you you would have a little bit more than just a little bruise on your cheek. He simply dismissed the case. Point being here is Gatti was never charged with anything so she can say whatever the hell she wants. I know Gatti like to party but I don't see him as a wife beater but I could see him slapping her if she had a hot temper like the say.
