It's either OK to wear or it isn't. End of.

I don't know this is one of the few times where I might actually side with political correctness.

The school just behaved appropriately. Look at the shitstorm that was cooked up in the UK a few months back when the Muslims wanted a peaceful march through Wooten Basset, which just happened to be the town famous for honouring dead UK soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

There were so many protests that they actually rushed a new law in to outlaw this groups freedom of speech in order to protect against a riot they said.

    What's the difference here exactly?

They obviously don't want to risk fighting at school so they sent them home.

I seem to remember all of you being opposed to the Muslim march so why the change of heart here?

The flag wearing brigade sound like a bunch of incendiary minded twats to me.

I agree.... As soon as I read it, the first thing I thought is, why are these kids wearing the shirts that day? I bet the other 364 days of the year they didn't bother, but because it was "Mexican" day and a day for them to be proud of themselves, they wore the US t-shirts to kind of get attention, and also kind of show a seperateness to the Mexican's.....

I remember when we had a huge group of Japanese exchange students come to our school, and on their second day I wore a t-shirt which has a picture taken during Vietnam of a japanese lady with a machine gun pressed to her head...
It was applauded by all my friends, but I was quickly asked to remove it or I would be sent home...
Which is what I expected and was the right thing to do.... I was wearing it to be a little turd,,, and I bet if you go to the root of why those kids wore their USA flag shirts on the Mexican day, it was to equally be turds....

Going to far would be not allowing US flags to be raised on Flagpoles that day, or existing flags be taken down for the day.... But 2 kids turning up at school trying to play the "country" card against all the Mexicans on their day, then they should definitely be sent home if they won't remove the shirts..

(( this was the shirt I wore to school... Clearly I was asking for trouble ))

Absoloute disgrace, political correctness gone completely mad

One of the things people on the outside see in america is the peoples pride in their country and its heart warming

You take away pride and you may as well had the terrorists your white flag over
    one dangerous horrible bloke

So, basically a bunch of American kids decided to wear clothing with the US flag on a Mexican holiday at their school. It just so happens that there are a lot of Mexican kids at the school too, so in order not to cause offence the kids were asked to take off their bandanas and turn their t-shirts inside out. They refused and subsequently got sent home.

Now is it only me that thinks that this is one serious overreaction? I mean, these kids are American and it is their own country right? Surely it's not an offence to anyone to wear your own national colours? It's like me trying to order all the Koreans to take down their national flags because it's St Georges day and they shouldn't offend me. It seems a bit ludicrous to me. If I want to be around only Mexican colours surely I should go back to Mexico? Those kids did nothing wrong in my eyes and they should not have been punished.

What are your thoughts on this? The link is kindly provided below.

Be interesting to see how often the kids on question wore their national colours shirts on other days.

If they're choosing to wear it only on this specific day then it suggests they are wearing it to get a rise out of someone. If this is the case then the school acted correctly.
    I aren't a fan of patriotism anyway. It's bizarre.

Me too. It is something I really don't connect with at all.

Getting on with a person is enough for me, I couldn't care less if they have a British passport.

so why are you taking such a hardline patriotic stance here? The important thing is the Mexicans got to celebrate their national day. Why provoke them by draping yourself in the American flag?

Because I do believe that people should do what they want in life just so long as they don't hurt others. A Korean wrapped in a Korean flag isn't going to kill me.

Lets see....you are in the United States of America, you are attending a school funded, regulated, and administered by United States tax payers. Last time I looked there are no recognized Mexican holidays in either the school system or government of the United States. So a vice-principal, who is hispanic...tells you that it is offensive to wear an emblem identified as the flag of the United States of America in your school, because it might 'offend' someone celebrating a foreign holiday. I suggest that Principal and any hispanic student who felt offended, be taken on that holiday to a cemetary to witness the burial of a soldier returning home in a coffin drapped with that same flag, and being laid to rest. Tell the family and others at the burial site why you feel offended, and ask them if they feel the celebration of your foreign holiday is more important.

Yep the old rally cry to American patriotism and how any disagreement over any issue always comes down to not supporting those proud servicemen and women who laid down their lives so bravely that the rest of the world can live in peace.

No Bilbo...its called sacrifice and respect. And folks like you get to live under the blanket of protection that is provided by those you sneer at as "Patriotic". You get to do that in English and not German or Japanese, or Chinese, or Russian.

Right and what exactly does a principle sending some kids home for an afternoon as they were pouring cold water on some fellow classmates national celebrations have to do with those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan?

But I am grateful to the US for invading Iraq and other countries in the Middle East and signing up my little Island country to assist them. I feel safer now knowing that the Arabs hate us Brits as much as you yanks and that after we joined up with you Americans in your brave and gallant efforts they have so far only bombed us once in London.

Although to be fair your guys have killed more of us in friendly fire than the terrorists did on that day.

You know Bilbo..I was drafted and sent to Viet Nam. I did not believe in the war, did not want to go, had a wife and baby on the way. But I was sent by the people elected to run our government..I stepped up and did my duty. Some guys faked illness, some guys deserted and went to Canada. I never met a GI who wanted to be over there. I got a purple heart and returned home to a depressed economy and jobs tough to find. I think I know what your choice would have been, and today I meet guys who are ashamed that they chose to run and hide during those times. Well, you just go right on making fun of the real people who will man the guns, and be there when the chips are down. I suspect you are a young man who has not experienced going to a foreign country ruled by an oppressive government who would throw you in prison for uttering anything subversive. You still miss the point of this being a school in the United States and NOT Mexico. Now if you really want to offend Mexicans on that holiday..go into Mexico and wear a French flag on your shirt--but myself and my grand kids have the right to wear an American flag on our shirt in a U.S. public school....simple as that.
