Think Ray Mercer did well to start at 27ish?

Ray's another guy who only turned pro late. He was a well established amateur and Olympic gold medalist at that. Many amateur fighters start pro late, mid 20s. Guys like Sergio Martinez, who didn't even start boxing until his 20s are the guys who are impressive. Though that late and successful as a pro is very rare. Normally success as a pro after starting late would be like Kermit Cintron who started boxing just before he was 20.

I just read about Mickey Rourke, the actor. He stopped boxing at 20 and then resumed it at 39!

During his boxing career, Rourke suffered a number of injuries, including a broken nose, toe, ribs, a split tongue, and a compressed cheekbone. He also suffered from short term memory loss.

This is so sad, it's almost funny . Do you know of any other such case? Does it always have to end up like this? Rourke at least had the money to fix his face .

Well, he was a pretty decent amature fighter as I recall. Had a good record.

Yes and Ron Lyle damn near died in prison from being stabbed....he was a tough mofo and well skilled considering how late he started.

McCline was pretty decent as well for a late starter
