when ward first went pro he was compare to RJJ allot, he used to try to fight on the outside more than he does now, and in some of his early fights he did resemble RJJ, maybe tarver meant the athleticism or how dominant he is

ward is becoming hopkins with RJJs athleticism

I don't see the RJJ similarity at all. Ward does what he does very well and he looks like he's been a champion for years but it's not great to watch. The Dirrell fight is supposed to be in a neutral venue and I think the only way to beat Ward is speed. Dirrell has to get in and land first and he's definitely got the speed to do it. Ward is a tenacious fighter though and he's going to be difficult to beat.

Tarver's comments last night comparing Andre Ward to Roy Jones and saying that Ward is fighting better competition was one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard a boxing commentator say.

So Allan Green is a better fighter than James Toney ?!

Hell I'd go as far as to say that Thomas Tate and Merqui Sosa were better fighters than Allan Green.

Roy Jones Jr. took both men out in 2 rounds.

Andre Ward is a nice kid and a very good fighter, but he is NOWHERE NEAR the fighter Roy Jones Jr. was in his prime.

Lets not forget Roy Jones Jr. hardly ever lost a round and was P4P the best for a decade.

Andre Ward was dropped by Darnell Boone...

well to be fair roy hadnt faced toney yet. This was Ward's 22nd fight, jones 22 fight was against BHOP. So in that regard hell no he hasn't faced better comp. But those guys you named Jones faced them after his 22nd fight.

Ward has beaten Kessler who still isn't better than any version of BHOP, but he did face him earlier than Jones faced BHOP.

When I first watched Andre Ward he did remind me of Roy Jones. I have not seen him fight recently and shame he has moved to a B Hop style. When the fight was made with Green, it reminded me of the first Jones v Hopkins fight, amateur star versus blue collar fighter.

I wasn't going by fights, I was going by Jones at Middleweight and specifically Super Middleweight.

Though he may have fought Tate at LH.

    Can't recall for sure.

Even Jorge Fernando Castro was tougher and a better fighter than nearly everyone on Ward's resume.

And Jones fought him very early on.

    Same with Sugar Boy Malinga.

Yeh on comp Ward hasn't come close to touching Jones jr by his 23 fight. Both had high visibility but Ward more so as Jones wallowed in Fla a bit.Good call on Castro,he may have been as one dimensional as they come but kept coming with it...shit I think Stephan Johnson was overall better than Green the other night ha.Think Tate would have smacked him around.Crazy...the faster Jones fades today the more I find me praising his early stuff

No I get what you're saying, but Jones didn't face those guys until after his 22nd pro fight. Ward just had his 22nd pro fight, on his record at this point vs RJJ..he has miranda, kessler, green..

Whereas Jones up to and including his 22nd fight had castro, wolfe, thomas and hopkins...

Will Ward face anyone as good as Toney? Right now don't see anyone in the near future...perhaps dirrel but he's not prime yet..so maybe later

You gotta remember who said the comment, it was Tarver. Him and Jones don't really play well with each other at recess.

Yes I know you gotta consider the source.

Tarver clearly still has some bad blood or disdain for Jones.

Probably cus he has man boobs and Jones has rock hard pecs.

On the bright side he wants to go to heavyweight and fight Haye or the Klits.

So I'll enjoy what happens to him after all his trash talk. I like to think of Tarver as the trash talking boy and any top 10 heavyweight as the speed bag.

    agreed

tarver still bitches about that 1st fight to this day, in reality had he of fought a prime RJJ on all 3 occasions it would of ended with tarver eating ring mat

andre ward is a good fighter at best, RJJ and him are worlds apart

    Indeed.

Roy Jones is arguably the greatest boxer who ever lived, at least the most talented. In his prime he was untouchable.

And Tarver clearly lost the first fight. He won 5 rounds out of 12, faded down the stretch and Roy took the decision and rightfully so.
