Actually, there has been 2 documented deaths in a "sanctioned" MMA match. Remember there are a lot of MMA unsanctioned fights they call exhibitions and don't count towards your record. I've seen a lot of these and most the time there isn't even a medic or any medical help there. Guys just go to the hospital on their own. But I've never personally seen a guy look like he was hurt tragically in one of these exhibitions though. But all in all I can see your argument has very understandable because not only the sustained beating as you mention but the fact that most of the fight is beatings to the head. In MMA there are a lot of fights that end without any or many significant strikes being landed. I think that element helps make it safer than any other factor.
