Not really. My father in law was a 33 degree mason for a good 7 years. He was an incredibly well respected man in his social circles, as I am sure you are aware of others around you but of course it really only matters what professional circles you venture in also.

33 degree would either refer to Scottish Rite or York Rite, there are only 3 degrees (entered apprentice, fellowcraft, master) of regular Blue Lodge Masonry. I'm not denying your father in law was a Mason, just making you aware of the appendent bodies of Masonry.

He could have been both, loads of Masons keep studying the catechisms until they have learned everything they can. Knights Templar is a rank in York Rite, and the 33rd degree in Scottish Rite is a ceremonial degree, usually one only achieves the 32nd degree.
