Eyewitness News: Corrie Sanders dies

"Johannesburg -

The ex-wife of shot SA boxing champion Corrie Sanders saw him being shot by robbers and described the night to Eyewitness News.

Sunette Sanders said robbers came into the Thatch Haven restaurant in Brits on Saturday night and started kicking and slapping people.

Sanders and her ex were attending the 21st birthday party of a nephew.

She became emotional when she told how Corrie dove to protect his daughter when shots were fired.

“I think he died a hero. He was just protecting his girl because they were shooting.”

Sanders was shot twice, in the arm and stomach.

News of his death has shocked the country and tributes and condolences have been streaming in.

I heard yesterday, was shocked! Gave Vitali, Rahman and Wlad one of (if not the!) hardest nights of there careers! Never bragged about it (unlike morons like haye who claim to be HW saviours and then back that up with nothing but verbal diatribe!) Vitali to this day reckons sanders was his hardest ever opponent, rahman rates him as the hardest puncher hes ever faced and the loss to sanders made wlad want to become a better fighter!

Avoided? Definitely! Overlooked? In a sense yes!Ibelieve a fight with moorer fell through,and HBO pulled the plug on a tua fight! Shame cos i wudda picked him to KO moorer and a tua fight would have probably been a classic slugfest!

Great 'H2H' fighter (Top 20 of all time!) One of only a handful of SOUTHPAW HW champs ever!

Corrie Sanders dies: Former heavyweight champion shot dead during robbery in South Africa | Mail Online

South African heavyweight Corrie Sanders, who beat Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBO world title in 2003, has died after being shot during a robbery.

Sanders caused a major shock when he inflicted a second-round knockout defeat on Klitschko in Hanover nine years ago.
He gave up the belt later in the year and lost in eight rounds to the Ukrainian's brother Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title in Los Angeles in April 2004.


North West Police Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said that gunmen entered a restaurant in the town of Brits where 46-year-old Sanders was attending his nephew's birthday celebrations.
Brigadier Ngubane said: 'I can confirm Corrie and his family were celebrating his nephew's birthday, turning 21, and enjoying a meal last night. In the midst of the celebrations, at about 7.45pm in the evening, about three suspects came in.


'They were planning to commit an armed robbery.
'Then in the armed robbery they shot randomly. Corrie was shot in the hand and also the stomach.
'They fled with a digital camera and also a handbag of one of the people who was in the restaurant.'
Sanders was rushed to Kalafong hospital but died 'in the early hours of the morning', Brigadier Ngubane said.
There have been no arrests in the case, he added, but stated police are 'in hot pursuit'.
