Matthysse is slow of hand, slow of foot, and his chin has never really been tested (as far as I know). He's also pretty wild and careless inside the ring. He's a very good fighter, but by no means unbeatable. A pure boxer would give him fits.

I think people are getting a little carried away. Has he even fought a pure puncher? The answer is no but listening to Al and the crew you would think he was Chuvalo. He can be out boxed as an over the hill Judah showed and Devon. He caught up to Lamont tonight but seriously I'm not sure how Al can claim he's the best Jr welt in the division. Its like saying Valero was the best lightweight prior to his death because he had a 100% ko ratio. I'm not convinced he's this unstoppable force. Don't get me wrong that was impressive. I hope the Garcia fight gets made and I'd love to see him in with a guy like Rios.
I think Al is right. His two losses were contentious decisions against top rated fighters in their own backyard (he would almost certainly be unbeaten if the fights took place in Argentina). He just destroyed Peterson, which gives him the jump on Khan. Which leaves Garcia, whose best win is against Khan, and just had a tough fight with Judah.

So there's definitely an argument for Matthysse to be rated no.1 - And he is improving with big fight experience.

Watch the first couple rounds of the fight last night, and how often Matthysse comes up short when he wings that right hand. He throws it from too far away too often. Petersen was skipping back too far out of reach or so busy running away that he never countered it.
Against a real pro fighter- Petersen is a glorified amateur, at best- that understands distance and isn't afraid, Matthysse will get countered.
And he commits so much too that right hand, when he throws it and comes up short, those counters should be pretty significant.
Then there are those wide left swings he throws...honestly, I thought he looked real good against Soto, but he didn't impress me much last night, but Petersen was scared and isn't much good to begin with. Matthysse was showing all the signs of a guy that has fallen in love with his own power, swinging for the fences and looking to end it, and that's the beginning of the end more times than not. Ask Engels Pedroza.

Technically speaking I have to agree with you. Last night alone makes the statement that at least he's a contender for top dog but I still think some people and especially the crew are jumping to conclusions. Lamont was the first top 140 lad that he has beaten. Last night Lamont did the right thing in the first round by using the ring but he then followed up in the second by forgetting about the outside half. It was not because Lucas cut the ring off. All and all it was an impressive result worthy of the highlight reel but I just don't think he is what he appears to be.

I think he fought Maidana 4 times as an amateur losing 3 and drawing one. In saying that I think Matthysse stops him in the pro ranks but would be a cracking fight. I think Matthysse would struggle against Alexander again. Good boxer with a solid solid chin. Petersons chin has never looked great to me.

At 140 I cant see anyone beating him but are some great fights id like to see before he moves up, Garcia, Alvarado, Rios and Khan would all be very entertaining.

It'll be a great fight. But if Ortiz couldn't stop Maidana, I doubt Matthysse would

Victor? He did have Maidana down 3 times before being TKO'ed himself.
And IMO, Matthysse is a significantly bigger puncher than Ortiz is.

Yea he's weak against movement.. SOmebody with a good punch resistance, stamina, and the ability to stick and move in angles will beat him..

I see alot of post-fight high comments being thrown around like he's some great boxer-puncher but I dont think his boxing ability is that great. IM not putting him in the same category with the Brandon Rios and the Maidanas but he's certainly not that good of a boxer..

Thankfully, his fight wasn't aired on HBO. Those windbag commentators wouldn't have known what to do with themselves

On the other hand, his strategy for the Peterson fight might have been to push hard for the first few rounds because Peterson has a history of being dropped in the early rounds. Also, I thought he cut the ring off relatively well. It only took him one round really to get that down.

A pure boxer has and would give him problems. I'm not sure Garcia fits that bill though. I don't actually think anyone currently fighting in the top ten at 140 fits that bill.

Of course he has weaknesses. Sluggers are always fun to watch though and there aren't that many truly dangerous top level sluggers around right now.

In my opinion, Lucas Matthysse is too small to jump up in weight. As long as he's at 140, I'm not sure who beats him. Khan/Garcia/Alvarado/Rios/Provo. I just don't see them doing it.

I know I might get some grief here for saying this, but I can see Miguel Vasquez and Richard Abril giving Matthysse some problems. I understand that they are fighting at lightweight, but I really don't see Mathysse as a big junior welterweight. Both guys are tall lightweights with longer reaches than Matthysse, who have fought punchers before. Am I crazy?

Well, Abril totally schooled Rios (and then got robbed)... so it's not completely out of the question that he could give Matthysse fits. But then all Lucas needs is to land one punch... and we've all seen it doesn't even have to land flush.

As far as Matthysse's size... I think you're right. 140 seems like a tailor-made weight for him to stay at. Lamont looked significantly bigger in the ring, and if Lucas jumps to 147 the size difference between him and his opponents might be even more marked. Too bad, though. Because I'd love to see a Lucas-Floyd fight somewhere down the line.

Well he is a slow starter so he loses a good amount of rounds that way, and he is weak to a boxer who can move. This is a good win for him but he lost to a old Judah and had a close fight i had a draw against Alexander. He is good but i think this win kinda is over rating him, he moves up he loses to Bradley, Berto, Ghost, and Mayweather will make him look like a d list fighter. But at 140 i think he may shine not much really there at the moment that could make him look bad and he can be good watch i guess.

This happens all the time. A fight on paper looks close, the puncher gets the stoppage and highlight reel and the following day nobody can beat him. Never mind that this was his first prime time win against a prime top ten fighter. I'd love to see Marquez come back down. Garcia has the goods to beat him although I'd probably cheer for Lucas to stretch him out. If Oscar cant make that fight he has no business being a promoter. Love to see him and Rios which never happens in the present rift.
