15 ponds is quite a lot to take, but I think that Canelo will still smash Chavez jr who's correct at best. It'll be a pretty solid paycheck for both guy BUT if it's true that Canelo intends to fight GGG in september, the weight taken might play a toll on his performance against the human wrecking ball. And we all know that GGG is more than a threat for the mexican superstar.

You can moan and groan all you want (I agree the Golovkin-duck/weight situation is shameless) but this will be the biggest selling fight in the States this year.

Personally - as a stand alone fight - I think it's a great matchup. Jr is tough, naturally bigger and the nature of the fight must bring the Mexican balls out in him, otherwise he'll forever be slaughtered. Should be a cracker.

Whats the betting that there is some sort of rehydration clause in to stop Chavez Jr from turning into the hulk over night.
Despite the fact that is what old ginger pubes has been doing for however long now, I can't imagine him allowing someone to do it to him.

It'll be an interesting fight, Box Nation should get their hands on it which will be a bonus for the UK fans

    ginger pubes....

But dead on the money. GP (ginger pubes) has been bloating himself after the weigh-in for years...... but now he meets the Guru himself at that art form, JCC Jr. Would be interesting to know about that clause, if it exists. Hard to imagine Team Canelo would overlook that, since in this case Junior stands to gain a lot more from the bloating than GP would in this case.

not sure about a rehydration clause but chavez jr is going to be fined 1 million dollars for every lb overweight he is :S, if he doesn't make the weight at the weigh in of course.

I wouldn't mind this fight at all if canelo would have fought GGG and lost. It's a fight that has potential to be exciting but has no relevance for their rankings as fighters.

Default Saul Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (May 6, 2017)

I saw the pre-fight hype on Box Nation and I found it very untruthful and uninspiring.

    Great looking card this
I am looking forward to the main event but have massive doubts that they can both honour the catchweight limit of 164.5 lbs, there are allegedly "severe sanctions" if Chavez fails to do so however Chavez claimed recently that he is close to weight and believes he can boil down to around 160 lbs.
I'll believe that when i see it!!!

The catchweight contest will take place at an agreed weight of 164.5 pounds, with severe sanctions in place should Chavez come in heavy. It is pushing five years since Jr fought below the Super-Middleweight limit and is also an increase of over 10lbs that Canelo hit the scales ahead of his last outing, against Britain’s very own Liam Smith.
Whilst the weight will be a strong talking point prior to the contest, there’s national pride at stake. Talks have been ongoing for what seems years but now that the ink has dried on contracts, it is fitting the contest will take place on the coveted Cinco De Mayo weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo is arguably the biggest name in boxing at present and added the WBO World Super-Welterweight Title to his ever growing belt collection back in September.
Fans will be upbeat a future fight with Gennady Golovkin, that has been long in the offering, can now be made should he advance against Chavez after various hurdles were overcome in the negotiations.
Son of the legendary three-weight World Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, Jr will know this fight is his opportunity to get back into the big time.
After winning and subsequently defending the WBC World Middleweight Title over a year long period, Chavez then was dethroned by Sergio Martinez back in September 2012. Despite giving Martinez hell for the last round, it was still a unanimous decision victory for Martinez which proved to be Jr’s fight taste of defeat.
After spending a year out of the ring, Chavez pilled on the pounds and outpointed Bryan Vera in both their fights to set up a contest with Andrzej Fonfara.
Chavez was sent crashing to the canvas for the first time in his career in the ninth round and then failed to come out of his corner for the start of the tenth handing Fonfara a TKO victory.
Two points victories have followed, most recently with Dominik Britsch in December which marked a landmark 50th professional victory for the now 30-year-old.
Speaking after the announcement of the fight, Canelo revealed: “I will be prepared, like I’ve been throughout my career, to give a great fight. I want to remind you that when two Mexicans fighters face off, a spectacular show is guaranteed. And I can assure you that May 6 will be no exception, especially during the Cinco de Mayo festivities.”
Patriotic Chavez added: “I dedicate this fight to Mexico. I’m going to win, but my country will too because this is the fight boxing needs.”

The hype and build up I saw was more about Chavez Snr and Oscar dating back to the 90's.

I liked when Junior said at least I have not avoided anyone.

I bet you canelo will be the favourite in this fight.

Although In Spanish, I watched the HBO face off earlier, I thought it was good, Jr properly gave ginger the hump when accusing him of being a cherry picker and took it on the chin when Canelo called him a Mexican laughing stock.

If Jr is comfortable at this weight this will be a good fight.

I'm thinking it'll be a good fight. As we have already seen this year where many of the underdogs were basically given no chance but ended up extremely competitive and producing nice fights.
