Ricky is a down to earth guy but like has been said not many non-boxing fans are familiar with his achievements outside of USA.

I have friends who are aware of him but don't know that he is world champ or the calibre of fighter in Tszyu he beat to get it.

I guess its cos all main bouts are now on SKY - mostly on box office.

Benn and Eubanks rivalry captured the nation and made them household names. They both owe a lot to each other. They also started on ITV fight night with Reg Gutteridge !

Wasn't around in Cooper's era and know little about it except the night he floored Clay, so don't really know the extent of his popularity.

But Bruno's popularity as a fighter in Britain is unlikely ever to be matched. He was lovable and funny - and I think deep down we all knew he was shite !

But who will ever forget the nation screaming for him to hold McCall in the final round as he got the win, Harry Carpenter exclaiming "get in there Frank" when he hurt Tyson in their first bout and the disappointment when he folded in their second clash.
Don't bully fat kids - they've got enough on their plate

I think it's all to do with the internet.

The internet was not so popular when Eubank and Benn was about.

You say Hatton is big in the U.S but only amoungst us boxing fans. If you went out onto the street and asked somebody they'd probably not know who he was

while i feel ricky is overrated--particularly on this board (where benn and eubank still get about 4 threads a day and neither has thrown a punch in almost a decade) US fans will like him cuz he comes to fight and has an all action style........i

It might have something to do with Hatton currently being an active fighter whereas those guys are long retired

Yeah - that explains why people like Jenna Jameson, Inari Vachs and Guage are so popular over here as well (!!)

Hatton is nowhere near as popular as Eubank or Benn, they had 42,000 people watch their fight at Manchester Uniteds stadium.

Only 22,000 people watched Hatton fight Tszyu, a genuine world title fight against a genuine legend

Outside of boxing Hatton isn't even a celebrity in Britain, nor Joe Calzaghe.

By the far the most popular fighter in Britain now is Amir Khan. Completely underserved in my opinion, I mean he didn't even win the olympics but there you go.

I judge a fighter's true fame by whether or not my mum has heard of them.

Trust me she doesn't have a clue who Ricky Hatton is, had never heard of Joe Calzaghe until I made her watch the Lacy fight when she came over for dinner a few weeks ago and hadn't even heard of Amir Khan

Yet she could recognise Frank Bruno even by just hearing his voice and she knows who Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn are.

I think Henry Cooper and Bruno are the only two boxers to have ever truly crossed over from boxing to mainstream celebrity in the uk, then Benn and Eubank, and for sadder reasons Michael Watson are probably the best know fighters in the uk along with Khan.

The main reason for this was because that was the capacity, the 22000 sold out in less than 3 hours. Like i say it's due to exposure nothing to do with there personality or skills, it's just unfortunate Sky had Boxing monopolised for the last 10 or so years.

ONLY 22000? How many people were at Judah vs Mayweather. Plus, everyone knows that fight would have easily sold 50,000 tickets in a few days. No one can deny hatton's pulling power. Just wait till you see boston!

had hatton fought tszyu outdoors in a football stadium it would have sold out. no doubt about it. u see when he eventually fights at a british football stadium (gotta fight at man city one day). even for a voluntary defence it will pack out
