Ouch! This thread hit a soft spot with me. Mike was my first hero in any sport. The day that I found out that he wasn't invincible nearly crushed me! And then all of his legal troubles REALLY broke my damn heart. Cryin' ass shame is what all of that was.

Even still, I nearly bawled when he gave up his last fight out of nowhere. Not that I expected some long string of comebacks out of the man or anything.

We can say what we want about Mike Tyson and how he ruined his career but he still holds fascination that all the current heavyweights (and the majority of the past heavyweights) don't have. He was a great fighter and his downfall was certainly sad, and yes, he was his own worst enemy, but this is boxing. Tyson was a great fighter, and in the 100% unlikely event of him coming out of retirement he would still sell out anywhere IMO. Enough said.

I think he meant training wise.....he was a friggin beats normally but he has come in a bit "soft" by old tyson standards....the swagger is gone.....

it might sound funny but i really feel like Tyson just got tired of hurting people... Even if you look at his early years every time he knocked somebody out it look like he felt really bad he would go over and pick them up and kissand hug them.. It was just that he finally found something that he was possibly the best ever at and was making money off of and finally getting love and acceptanced from people something he probably always wanted.. Being that he had come from the street and a broken home ... I feel like he just really didnt love boxing he was just gifted in it

Not sure about that - I mean he was a real student of the history of the sport and spoke about it with a real passion?

so does larry merchant but that doesnt been he has the killer instinct to bash someones head in when there wobbly .. boxing takes a certain amount of killer instinct and i really think tyson lost that desire to hurt people...but your right he was a student of the game and loved the old fighters at one time

"tyson lost that desire to hurt people"?!?!?...did you watch his fights against Savarese, Botha, Ruddock and Holyfield 2 ?...If anything his desire to hurt people became his focus ....It's more like he lost the desire to train and the heart to fight hard...Tyson will always have the sociopaths desire to hurt weaker opponents...its when they fought back he always had trouble...

Yeah, agreed, but i also think that he studied the sport so passionately because he wanted to know everything about the sport that he was good enough at to make a living out of it. Cus D'Amato probably had a little input into the fact that Tyson studied boxing history.
I do believe that Tyson has grown to dislike boxing, but i don't believe that he hates the sport completely, otherwise why would he turn up to watch fights
