In researching some things for this chapter I read a lot bout the late 50's and early 60's when all over the USA there were black and white only water fountains, restaurants etc... people kind of think automatically that this was such a long time ago but... suppose, for example, a guy was working at a restaurant in Louisville back in, say, 1960 and he was in charge there, he was 24 years old, working days running the restaurant and he regularly stopped blacks from eating there, told them to get out, most likely in cruel fashion... he grew up in a day when a black kid could get lynched for whistling at a white woman (Emmit Till, for example)... it's crazy to think that the guy today is still here most likely... and he is only 70 years old. He's still walking around every day... I wonder what guys like that, guys that told blacks to eat out in the alley, think of the country today... with Oprah being a megastar... Barack Obama a presidential candidate... Terrel Owens... Farrakhan... Dave Chapelle... Ice T and CoCo...rap music, hip hop (NWA, Public Enemy) videos... ... or better yet, Eminem... man, he must think he's in the twilight zone!! I picture him at a supermarket checkout line and a young black girl, sixteen years old with grandparents he might have kicked out of the restaurant back in the day, who is chewing gum and talking on her cell phone is the clerk... he's in a hurry and wants to get out there to go somewhere but she's on the phone, rolling her eyes, laughing and/or sucking her teeth, telling him to "hold up a minute." If there is a such thing as "karma" (what goes around comes around) it is awesome sometimes, no?
