You take my argument and twist it something silly. Calzaghe hasnt completely ruined Lacy. But that fight would have had an impact, would it not?? You dont go to a hostile venue and take a beating smelling of roses, do you??Originally Posted by dumdane
Lacy is a decent fighter and its a shame about his injury..no he isnt the finished article by a long shot but he is a decent fighter nonetheless.![]()
there have been a few proven fighter who have takning beating like lacy did and not come back from it - no one is saying lacy was the best thing since sliced bread.Originally Posted by dumdane
According to half the world Lacy was the best thing since sliced bread - 'The Middleweight Mike Tyson,' poster boy at Superbowl etc etc. But suddenly he was just undertested and overhyped. But I am sure you were going round telling everybody how bad Lacy was before the Calzaghe fight and were totally unsurprised by how the fight wentOriginally Posted by dumdane
Yeh right
I reckon that was the most one sided world title fight in memory
So either
a.) Lacy is one of the worst world champions ever (which means he fooled the world in a an incredible way to be be talked about top 5 p4p if he won and being the second coming for Boxing)
or...........
b.) Calzaghe may actually me a little bit good
I reckon on the basis of only losing 4 amatuer fights in 130 (all when he was a teenager) winning 3 consecutive ABA belts, being the longest reigning world champion in boxing (still waiting to here who HE has ducked during his reign) and never looking even remotely like losing a fight (even if he did get caught by Mitchelll)
I would lean very slightly towards option B

I just want to see Joe in a good fight the Kessler fight would be great or perhaps a move upto light heavy and fight Chad Dawson he needs the best now he's coming to the end of his career if he had a run of 4 top names to end his career he would definately go down as a british boxing legend
He has undoubtedly lost his best years coz of his hands and been fooked up over his divorce and court case.Originally Posted by tysonbruno

If you look at the Super Middleweight division during his reign, you can't really find any better fights that he could've had in that division.
Agreed he MUST fight Kessler and AGREED Manfredo and Bika are pathetic follow ups to the Lacy win
Loisng patience with him myself - but still totally convinced about his ability.

I feel sorry for him that he did'nt come along at the time of Benn,Eubank,Collins,Toney,Jones and Nunn But that is'nt his fault it was a stronger division in early to mid 90's
CC good points. Still can't get over the ABA not taking himt o the olympics, dumbest move ever. who the hell drops a fighter from the Olympics coz hes so good he was embarresing people? don't make sense.Originally Posted by BIG H

A decent fighter most definitely. Perhaps more than that too (hopefully time will tell). I'd still rate him arround top-5 SMW and it's quite possible he's better than that. If the hype hadn't been so off the scales out of proportion I can also see why so many ppl liked Lacy (Hype was so bad it even made me root for Calzaghe at the timeOriginally Posted by miles

But i still object to the notion that if Lacy did/does not look impressive following the Calzaghe fight, it's because Joe ruined him. It's possible the beating he took plays a role. But the extend of it is not at all a proven fact. Lacy was not THAT proven to begin with.
And as for the damage he took in the Calzaghe fight. On a psychological level it MIGHT have changed him. But that's pure speculation. I think the physical effect of the manny blows he took is a bit overrated as the wast majority were your typical swarming but inaccurate and less than powerfull Calzaghe slaps. His face did look a right bloodied mess after the fight. But slaps do tend to create a large amount of relatively superficial damage don't they?
The talk about how great Lacy's chin was since he remained standing is a bit off the mark in my opinion since very few of them were heavy blows.
The credit he got for his mental strength to stay on his feet despite being outclassed badly is fully deserved though. But what is there to suggest he kept that mental strength throughout the beating - but then would have lost it afterwards?
I say Calzaghe. What ever you say about him, you can't deny that everytime Calzaghe steps in with a higher class of opponent, he ups his game...Lacy, Eubank etc
Kessler would bring out the best in Calzaghe. Calzaghe is too quick for Kessler IMO.
