I have to agree somewhat with the article. When boxing was a mainstream sport, you had major title fight on regular, non-pay TV. For instance, the classic Jose Luis Ramirez-Edwin Rosario bout was on live afternoon NBC tube. There are countless other examples. For boxing to regain its rightful spot among the major sports, it's got to get major fights back on non-pay TV (at least occasionally).
........and that's only the last two months of what I feel had been the best year of boxing since I can remember.Originally Posted by eagle

Hmm monkey may be onto something here........ Yes some football games are on tv on a weekly basis but if you're looking to watch a certain team or game, there's a good chance you wont be able to see it without a pay channel. They also have boxing on regular tv fairly often but again, if you want to see the biggest names, you're gonna have to watch a pay channel. It's called capitalism.Originally Posted by Trainer Monkey

For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

Boxing will never die, and this year alone is proving it. Though I will say that this sport has always walked the knife edge of being "respectable" and appealing to the general public, and being a mainstream sport that everyone talks about. With the shows like 24/7 it definately helps. This will always be a sport for the working class people; people who grew up poor and had to fight for everything. Boxing will only die if the poor or working class dies, and that will never happen.
If we go by the PPV figures of the OLDH - Mayweather fight (2.4 million), boxing maybe on the rebound. In the 70s and 80s, it used to be just the heavyweight (Ali, Holmes and Tyson era) and possibly the welterweight division (Sugra ray, Hearns, Duran) that got airtime. Now we have a vibrant light featherweight, welterwight, light heavyweight and even a straw weight division (with iron boy Calderon) getting sufficient airtime (surprisingly the Heavyweight division is in the doldrums).
Read this folks. You will notice that Boxing is only dead in the eyes of mainstream media:
