I wasn't even a boxing fan until 2 years ago. I watched ali-chuvalo 1 on espn classic (it was the first REAL boxing match I had ever seen in its entirety) and I thought it was unbelieveable that a human being could fight like that for 15 rounds.

I guess my first one, which I believe I've said on another similar thread before, is that after having a big argument with my parents about staying up late (past 10pm) when I was about 9 or 10, I sneaked into my Grandad's room and watched the Eubank v Benn fight with him, but had to hide sharpish when my dad came to tell grandad goodnight. I just remember I thought Eubank was an absolute tosser, and wanted Benn to really beat him badly.
Ali winning the title back against Foreman in late 74 (actually 33 years ago yesterday).

That was a great night at my uncles house. After the fight my grandfather brought out his guitar and started singing old Mexican folk tale music. While some people played dominos and others poker.

Frank Bruno beating some chap called Bugner. I was at my Aunts house and they were all getting wasted downstairs. They totally forgot and only remembered when i went down to tell them Bruno had won.

Watching the old shows on ESPN with Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and Norton. I would watch the marathons on Ali and all the great fighters back in those days. I think the first fight I watched(not live but a replay) was Ali, bustin up Gerry Quarry. I used to hate Ali with a passion and was always pulling for the other guy. After growing out of that stage I grew to appreciate him and started to actually like the guy. The first fight I saw live was Larry Holmes dismantling Gerry Cooney, only to knock him out in like round 13 or 14....I was hooked after that. My first Ring magazine, I read every single article probably twice, it was Virgil Hill on the cover, at the time he was undefeated and they were matching him up against alot of the greats and how he would do. There was a pullout poster of Tommy Hearns, that sucker went up on the wall.
I'm guessing you're talking about their 2nd fight.Originally Posted by CutMeMick
Chavez's fights were often shown live in the UK on Saturday afternoon free tv. I remember watching this fight. Chavez had blown away Mayweather in 2 easy rounds at Superfeather, but Roger looked much stronger at LightWelter. If I remember, Mayweather came into the ring wearing a HUGE sombrero. Chavez was at his best breaking Roger down and winning his third world title. Me and my mates would watch them down the pub while waiting for the football to start.

I knew ITV showed good fights in the 80's but really did not know they used to show JCC live. If it was back on terrestrial TV it would get a bigger fanbase with youngsters like us growing up and watching it.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
I went to my first boxing match when I was 8. I don't even remember who was fighting it was so long ago and it was nothing but club fighters. It was the same place I went to when watching wrestling. But it was Ali who made it happen. During recess the black kids would talk about Ali and that is when I began watching boxing with more interest. I loved to listen to Ali talk his trash. It was poetry with a twist.
