Nice story, good tale by your trainer.

SRR was on record as saying he would not fight Burley because SRR was 'Too Pretty'

During SRR's reign as 147 World champ (1946-1950), Burley was fighting the last 4 years of his 14 year career (1936-50). I do not think he would be sweeping Gym floors in Detroit.

By 1946 Robinson knew exactly who Charley Burley was, and if he did spar with him, he would of known he was facing Burley, but hey it was a good story.

Charley Burley would have been my pick for the story even though I doubt he would have been sweeping floors. Burley has been put up as a rival to SRR as best figher p4p, although he's little known these days - I read about him a long time ago & I think it was Bk who had to remind me of his precise name when I brought him up in a topic.Â

I have never said he didnt know who Burley was, and it just happened that particular day they had asked Charley to do them a favour and sweep the floor, being a nice kind of chap he obliged. Many a time they would ask Jo Louis to move round with Burley, but he would just smile and tell them to piss off.

As I say, over a period of weeks we did alot of talking and the conversation got around to great fighters. He asked me my opinion and I reeled off four of the best fighters that I had seen. The only time I'd seen Burley was during a fight with a guy called Smith who was a light heavyweight nearing the end of his career and what I had read of him and the old guy started laughing and told me that he was one of the main people who had had him inducted into the hall of fame. Also he was probably pound for pound the best fighter he had ever seen in his lifetime.

Now there are a few clues for you

Is this Eddie Futch's story about Charley and SRR? Sugar Ray fought on the same card as Charley earlier so he definitely knew who he was. The met in the early 40s. Charley spend most of those days in Cali then back in Pittsburgh. How he and a NYer would meet up twice in Detriot is hard to call. Charley never mentioned sparring SRR and he reportedly very honest and straightforward. I think the story is suspect.

Well, all I can say is like I have already said, I met and spent time with this man and had many hours of great boxing stories from him. I personally believe the story, I cant see why he would make it up, I got to know him quite well, he even invited me to go and work with him over there. I turned him down, one regret I will always have.

I had 4 or 5 up and coming champs of my own at the time and choices had to be made, I chose to stay with my lads, turned out well.

Charley was an extremely good fighter that was managed very poorly. Fritzie Zivic played him. Anyway, somebody in Ray's entourage at the time would have leaked that story. Where was Charley's trainer at the time. His name was Hiawatha or something like that? I don't know. I'm not buyin, but I'm a hardcore SRR fan.

    War

The story was told to me 20 years ago, and that was the general gist of it. I was not there and of course I did not see it, This is the first time I have ever told this story, I thought I would tell it to you lot.

Believe it or dont, up to you
