I can say that I bet many of you would be surprised of the opportunities available to a large majority of prisoners. We have teams of people employed in the system who's job it is to secure housing, employment and medical care post incarceration. The mental health wards I've worked on do a lot to assist inmates. Many inmates fake various forms of mental illness in hopes of getting housed in a mental health unit. Fortunately we do a decent job with the vetting process and try our best to make the help available to those who really need it.
In the US it is quite common for inmates to serve much less than half their imposed sentences with time of for good behaviour and other incentives. I am always well liked by the inmates as most of them know my contempt for authority is equal to there's. Sex crimes do happen in prison but it is not as common as society thinks it is. There are always inmates who use their homosexuality as a business venture or they simply get and give as much ass as they can during their stay.
Let me be clear, prison sucks. When I have worked in them I go out of my way to bring some laughter and break a few minor rules for the inmates. Don't get me wrong, there are some sick bastards who have earned life sentences and I'm sure there are some US prisons that are horrible but I can tell you for where they are at, many of these guys are being treated quite fairly and oddly enough they will go out of there way to tell you such things in conversation.
I will stop now but not before I say I think the US locks too many people up, I am stoically against the death penalty no matter what the crime and I have met non violent drug offenders who got life sentences which I feel is a miscarriage of justice.
In addition, Russian jails are thousands of times worse than ours, you don't need to do much research to back that up
