We have missed out on FB. I am too old for it and my children are too young for it.

Interesting to note that the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program "LifeLog" was cancelled the very day Facebook was established. "LifeLog" was a program designed to build a database tracking every minute detail of a person's life: what shows they watched, who they talked to, who they called on the phone, what their favorite color is, what magazines they buy, what books they read, what plane tickets they bought.

    Coincidence?

Looks like to me that the only thing you "missed out on" is handing personal information over to the government who is lol TOTALLY not selling it or using it for nefarious purposes because lol they're completely trustworthy as history has shown.

My question is who in their right mind would do this. Who lists their contact numbers on FB? Let alone send steamy detailed messages with personal information on a messenger. But I digress. I think there's a shit ton of personal responsibility that goes with social media. And a boat load of common sense. Does anyone actually post travel info, dates, times, location etc etc? This is just a face of equal and greater problems on the web. Shoot I won't even link home-mobile or i cloud whatever.

All I needed to see to know be weary-trust little is when I went to delete my account when first signing up and it turned into a drawn out psychological guilt trip and interview process, complete with 'friends' pics flooding me with captions like "Shirley Stinkle will really miss you" etc etc. Who the fark is Shirley Stinkle?
Cucked Zuck offered to "walk" one congress member through an algorithm, I think it was the one that "accidently" caused several conservative sites, including those two girls to be labeled as "unsafe" that congress women said no to the algorithm explanation faster than I've ever heard any politician answer a question. If the majority of these ban issues were algorithm related it would have been interesting to hear some technical explanation but as in all these public investigations it is more about asking questions to sound good then getting truly useful information. Facebook will prob get a billion dollar fine and in a few years everything is back to normal. Facebook has 73% of the US I really don't see them going anywhere. Sorry that 73% figure includes all of social media
Didn't catch it all but seemed pretty much a dog and pony show complete with props and site plugs for those two "banned" individuals. Agree they sounded more interested in being 'seen' doing something rather than actually knowing the basic inner fb, web or app workings ahead of time to therefore know what direction to question. Shark eyes Zuckerberg looked stumped when asked about Spacebook for the third time. Algorithm exchange from one was pretty interesting as he sighted terms and agreement having 3600 words and Data sharing portion having so many links that "how do people know what they are signing up for" and Zuckerberg gives him the run down on basics. Senator rewords the question 'what about stuff we're worried about not the fun stuff, and does Whats App e mail inform advertisers or does some algorithm spit out info to add platform'. Watching some of it and how people NOW are arguing the issue..ON fb reminds me why I didn't come online essentially until I started here . With every key stroke you leave a mark.

Another thing, I think this display of Facebook v congress shows how far behind our lawmakers are against these tech giants. For years the entire social media revenue stream has been from this targeted advertising. Any kind of "opt out" option for the user would fundamentally change the business model of these monsters. How the hell did people let themselves become so dependent on social media. What the hell was wrong with forums. I guess I'm an old fashion internet guy

Many people have been "Zuckers" for the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Zucker.

Imagine them chuckling to themselves as they count their $billions thinking "a Zucker is born every minute".

What is the final outcome of all this then? I've not followed it (I don't have facebook so it won't affect me one bit) I get that they have been selling data and they track people to a ridiculous level but what is going to change after all this shizzle?

will they just stop selling the data and tracking people to the extent they are or could it mean the end of facebook?

All the stuff I have watched on Youtube looks poorly done, everyone questioning him only gets 4 minutes, it usually takes 3 minutes 30 seconds to get him rattled and then they just pass over to the next person which give him time to regain his composure and avoid the pressing questions.

@Master Yeah but is that the most likely or worst case scenario?

I mean it seems like pretty big news unless it has just been inflated because Zucker has agreed to take the questions himself

He has refused to come to England and answer our questions.

Well said. This is not only Facebook doing this but all social media sites. Certainly something will have to happen since it has drawn so much public attention but I don't see anything major. Look at all the pharmaceutical companies that have been interviewed by congress with loud promises to change pricing and being scolded for 300 percent price gauges led by Elizabeth Warren mind you and absolutely nothing happens. Facebook will be fined and make some changes but in the overall scheme of things I don't see much happening

I don't really understand the outrage though, I'm on Twatter but I have never made a tweet and I have no followers (I don't even know how to make a tweet) but I get text notifications to my phone about boxing and the Villa, I'm fully aware that anyone can see what I'm doing but they will look at me and think I'm a sad act with no friends and no life.

how is all of this data that is being sold being used in such a way that it has been made such a big thing?
