I think this is the portion of the article that you should have focused on

Hopkins' promoter Don King and Calzaghe's backer Frank Warren reached agreement for a fight last year, and the US television station Showtime was prepared to underwrite the event. But after a $3m (£1.8m) payday had been agreed, the fight fell through when Hopkins doubled his purse demands

Hope this helps. It wont but there you go.
Hopkins was doing them a favor by giving them a chance for the fight to still happen. All they had to do was double the purse. This was a test on Calzaghe's and Warren's heart and balls. To see how much they had. And they failed. Cuz they didn't really want the fight that's why. You can't knock Hopkins for asking for more. He was the one in control. Hopkins had other options. Easier more profitable options. But he was willing to fight a bigger fighter and for a lot less money. All he asked was that they pay him a little more. Calzaghe and Warren punked out. Hopkins went on to fight De La Hoya and collect $20 million. Where's Calzaghe now? Still trying to get paid.

At the end of the day Bernard chose not to fight Joe for easier competition and more money right? You say that as if it's something noble.... Like Thomas Hearns would of been better off not fighting Hagler, Ray Leonard would of been better off not fighting Duran...

Depriving everyone of a dream fight like this out of being stubborn/scared or what whatever isn't something that can be defended

No at the end of the day Calzaghe chose not to fight Hopkins by not agreeing to his demands. Name me any fighter that does not want to fight De La Hoya?

If Calzaghe does not secure a big name soon, he will have one of the meaningless boxing careers in history. Why can't he get fights? Because he wont leave his home turf. I'm not sure if this next bit is entirely true, but Kessler travelled all the way to Australia to fight Mundine, he's not afraid to travel. That being said I doubt he would go to Joe's home turf, Kessler has the better belts and the pressure is not on him to make tihs fight happen.

So very true. Yet you'll be surprised how many of his little groupies ignore that fact.

In the mean time i feel that Calzaghe cant hang around at 168 much longer.
A fight with Kessler should be on the cards and after that we'll see if he can stay at 168?
i think anything other than a Kessler fight is not worthy of print or thought.....
It feels good to be back home.

I think offering Hopkins more money than he had ever made in his life is an indication of how much Calzaghe wanted the fight dont you? What were those other options by the way? Hakkar, Joppy, Allen? Did Hopkins make $3 million for any of those, or those three in total?

When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

The exact same reasons why Calzaghe will not be fighting Kessler.
But i'm sure when it's Calzaghe doing it, suddently it CAN be defended.

My money for the next fight is on Peter Manfredo Jr.

The fight will be 'big' and in the UK against an American according to Warren,
Because of his TV role, it will sell tickets and attract TV attension as the first contender to fight a world title fight. - It will also be a fight for Joe that is far easier than the hype would suggest thus protecting him for his 'mega' fight (please be Kessler!) Added to this Manfredo's name has been banded around previously when Calzaghe ended up fighting Bika.

To me it all makes sence - perfect oppenent on all Warren's critera and to the average fan it will generate huge interest, i think Manfredo has been released from his contender contract so that obsticle will be removed.

    We'll see

    So if it's Manfredo.

How should the level of competition be considered compared to the Bika fight?
(perhaps considering that some ppl now in retrospect chooses to rate Bika quite high)

    A step up?
    About the same?
    Worse?

Kessler is in his prime right now. He's fought over 35 times. This ain't Lacy and his barely 20 fights. He's got like 5 or 6 former champions on his resume. He's somebody. If Calzaghe beats him, than he can't be knocked. I'll give him credit. Hell, if he beats Kessler I'll never bad mouth Calzaghe again. And I'm talking about a real win. Not one of those "Kessler had him down 3 times, but lost cuz Calzaghe claimed he couldn't continue cuz of a suppose rabbit punch." Or "Kessler beat his ass for 12, but lost cuz they were fighting in Joe's back yard." A real win.

That's gotta be JanGeorg. He does that a lot. I don't like that style much.
Seen him copy some of my stuff once or twice as well.
If he's gonna do it. Credit the writer or at least make it clear you've picked it up somewhere.

I was annoyed when he used mine, but i didn't confront him about it.
I assume his reasons are that he finds it difficult to put his thoughts in english writing - so when he sees something repressentative of his own views, he'll just use that.
Still - don't like it much.

The boxing knowledge is very limited at Eastside. All the posters there are pretty much on the same level. Which is mediocre. Looks like one of them decided to try and jump from mediocre to genius level by copying the posts of a boxing genius from another site. I guess he taught nobody would noticed. O'well. It's not the first time it's happened.
