Gore had faults as a canidate, more wooden then Charlie McCarthey, the PMRC hearings, etc, but give the man his due for what he did do
And as far as Kerry,he served in the damned thing(unlike some people,ie the entire Bush administration) maybe he would have been a little better informed on wether or not we were pissing money and lives down a hole (we were)
Let me explain Vietnam for you
During WW2 the Japanese had control of Vietnam
Ho Chi Mihn kicked them out,not us,him
But we stomped in and gave control back to the French, nothing thrills people more like the forced deposing of a national hero
Unrest followed(what a shocker)
So in the 50's we start sending in "advisors"(troops)
One of the things Eisenhower said to Kennedy on the day of his innauguration was "Son I think your going to have send some troops in there"
Kennedy takes an attitude of "He's a bastard, but he's our bastard" all through his stay
Johnson sees its a cluster you know what,so he gets the sides to the table, and offers a deal that will get us out.
Oddly enough private citizen Nixon takes a tour of Nam,where recently declassified documents say he had meetings with the South Vietnamese. Those that were there say he swore if they held out,he'd get them a better deal.
After a ton of war crimes, including carpet bombing Cambodia and creating a clear path for the Khmer Rouge and all their "shennanigans" South Vietnam took the exact same deal Johnson offered them in the 60's
Damn if the guy who served in country wasnt exactly right about the wars morality, unlike the guys who heartily supported the war while working on a congressional campaign in Alabama,or a another campaign in Texas,or was having a pinoidal cyst,or working as a speech writer for Nixon, but not in point of fact, fighting the war they loved so.
Funny thing about war Lyle, people die in it
See I grew up in the shadow of Vietnam,my father served as a Marine there, and came back a very twisted man.
The girl next door that I played with as a kid,her dad was a miserable SOB,turns out her only son died when his Huey was shot out of the sky
Those are real people Lyle, and they got really screwed up by that war,it wasnt the peacenik hippies that ended that travesty,it was Ma nd Pa America who'd totally lost their taste for it
