Boxing has always been an ethnic/nationalistic sport, and it always will be. There's no problem whatsoever with brits who root for British fighters, or people of Mexican descent rooting for Mexican/Mexican-American fighters, Puerto Ricans rooting for PR fighters.... that's part of what makes boxing great and what makes fans so passionate. That's what makes the Filipino/Mexican crowds at the great featherweight matchups so great, or PR fans filling up MSG for Tito/Cotto, thousands coming to Vegas to watch Hatton, etc.

Obviously there's a line that some people cross. It's great to show passion for your countrymen, but you've got to still be intelligent enough to respect the talent and skill of the guys you're not rooting for. Some people are obviously not smart enough to do that.

wouldnt happen to be reffering to the brits booing of the US national anthem there are you??

Just for the record on that very night i had lads all around me jeering along with the thousands inside the MGM at stars and stripes yet even being totally wasted i realised how utterly tasteless that was and offensive to our american hosts.

I would refer to the football culture us brits experience on a regular basis though. When our national sides play abroad "god save the queen" is persistently frowned upon in other nations and heckled.

No excuse whatsoever i know. But it may just explain why the british fight fans inside the MGM that night felt it apt to jeer the supposed oppositions national anthem rather than just stay silent!!

Interesting thread. I usually go for the underdog . If not I have my have favourites which isnt usually based on nationalism but I would prefer a Brit to beat a non Brit . Here are some example exceptions .

    Barrera vs Paul Lloyd
    Barrera vs Wenton
    Barrera vs Naseem

    Cant think of anymore

I've seen it alot on the Calzaghe fight pretty much a white - black thing on that one; I myself am guilty of it with the up coming Cotto V. Margarito fight (look through any post on this fight and youll see where my loyalty lies.)
I dont really think its a discrimination or racism thing, I see it as more of a pride and Nationalistic thing.

Do you see this too? Are you guilty of it? Do you discount anyones opinion because of it?
I try to respond to what is said as opposed to who said it; this latter point is a common response by many posters. I know analyzing a fight can be influenced by one's nationality, but that is not all that may cause one to show bias, such as dislike of a boxer's personality or other factors. It's just not an exact science. My experience in the rhetorical arts leads me to recommend that posters focus on the logic (or lack thereof) of what is said, as opposed to who said it and who it was said about.
