    Japanese Art

As a self confessed Wapanese I will start with the most Iconic and familiar

    Hokosai

    The Great Wave Off Kanagawa

Taken from the wood block series 36 Views of Mount Fuji it is easy to see it's impact on Western Art losing some of it's power through ubiquity but stunning none the less.

    Seated Woman With Shamisen

You can see here how the economy of line and exuberant style has influenced everything from Disney Animators to Graphic Design

    Waterfall at Amida

Not only is the rendering of Scale magnificent as in the great wave, with the chasm behind the mossy cliffs adding drama to the endless waterfall but the subtle hint at the head of Amida Buddha* with the waterfalls opening and the perspective and interest generated by the three figures in the foreground, showcases a man at the top of his game.

    Hiroshige

A low ranked Samurai influenced by Hokusai and the last in many ways of the ukiyo-e artists. Very adaptable but great in realising moments within landscapes.

    Travellers surprised by sudden rain

    Goyu Station

You can see the Western depth of field here a new component in Japanese art.

    Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Often concerned with depicting heroic episodes in Japanese history his style appears even more modern and has been echoed in many comic book and tattoo artists work.

The Priest Nichiren Stilling a Storm at Sea

    Sceleton (Skeleton)

The skull here is very reminiscent of many old school style tattoos.

I'm going to my very first art class tonight. I am pretty excited about it. I've been thinking up what I should paint first....I've not come up with very many ideas, I suppose it'll just strike me when I'm staring at the canvas

So in order to get used to the brushes, mixing colors, etc I was given the assignment of replicating one of Van Gough's self portraits. It's very tough but I had great fun with it.

Recreating that is my task...an ambitious first chore, but by the end of the night I was getting the hang of the brushes and Van Gogh's painting style

I'm not working on the same exact scale of course so the details seem a bit off as does the color, but I will just go back over those spots again and eventually it will look better. I have some ideas for other paintings I want to do after I finish this one and I am very excited about those.
