People make comparisons because he is a houshold name in boxing. He was the self proclaimed greatest and people took it literally. He was great in his time against the 185 to 210lb guys but it is a different era in heavyweights with guys weighing in the mid 200's now and some above 300.I would love to see Ali in this era I just don't see him being able to tie up these big guys like he did back then. There aren't to many 210lb heavyweights that don't pack a big punch in the top 20 today.
Only 2 hws are over 300 pounds that i can recall and thats freakshow Butterbean and freak of nature 7 foot Valuev as i keep saying Ali was no small fry at 220 and would beat all crap hws today i can't see how you can think different forgetting size and forgetting Wlad and Vitali for second how many of hws are fit how many of them are fast and how many of them are talented ?? you think if 8 foot basketball player with no skill would be able to beat smaller basketball with loads of talent ?? i don't think so and im not comparing basketball with boxing what im trying to say is you need alot more than just size in boxing you need talent heart speed fitness how many hws have got that now ??
    Good points
    Ali was 6'3" 220
And he was able to move like he did,and maintain a punch rate most HW's today could only dream of,for 15 rounds
I don't think most heavyweights to day want to go to the cards for the most part, they look for the knockout most of the time.Today a heavyweight that doesn't knock guys out like Chris Byrd, doesn't get much respect people want knockouts.

Ali was dominant among great fighters
Marciano was sucessful among great fighters
Tunney was sucessful among great fighters
Lewis was pretty dominant against good fighters
Tyson was dominant among good fighters
Holmes was dominant among very good fighters

Wlad has been pretty dominant among average fighters

It may look confusing but all of the fighters above have a stronger case imo

Byrd isn't even 1/10th the spectacle that Ali would be in any time. He talked trash before it was common place in boxing. And actually 21 fights into his career he had 17 ko's (if my dvd collection showing that stat during one of his fights is accurate.). Saying he didn't have power is a joke because i've seen him bust peoples faces open only using a jab. Chris Byrd and Ali should never be put in the same sentence. Chris Byrd outboxes people, Ali just straight up embarassed them. Chris Byrd has never been a dominent heavyweight while Ali dominated the golden era passed his prime.

You can look at the stats and technically byrd is a two time champ and ali is a three time champ but lets look at their actual reigns:

    Byrd

won his first title because Vitali forefeited (which was the only way byrd was gonna win that fight). He then lost it in his next match to Wlad making him 1-1 in titles fights with 0 successful defenses. He then beats a washed up holfield (which would've been slaughtered by any version of washed up tyson and in evander is less washed up now than he was then) by decision. Has 5 successful defenses against the jobbers of the division and loses it again to wlad. Thus making him 6-2 in heavyweight title fights career wise. 4 wins against no bodies and a fluke win over vitali and a win over a beaten holyfield. Not impressive. Now let's move onto the other guy...

    Ali

Beat liston twice proving it wasn't a fluke (unlike byd vs. Vitali). He then goes on to successfuly defend it against 9 other people before he is forced to retire and sit out the rest of his true prime. This makes him 10-0 in title fights, already far superior to byrd. Then he returns out of his prime and loses to frazier after two tune up fights (yes i called quarry and bonavena tune up fights). 10-1 in career title fights. He then beats ellis to go on another run which was ended and restarted by ken norton. Now 21-2 in career heavyweight title fights. He then wins 14 more fights (including over frazier and foreman) before losing to spinks but at this point he's already way past his prime. Now leaving him 35-3 in title fights. He beats spinks in a rematch loses to holmes and get beaten by berbick forcing his retirement. Ending with a 36-4 career record in title fights (just for the record, joe frazier is 32-4 in his career). 3 of ali's losses came within his last 4 fights.

My point in all this, quit comparing Byrd and Wlad to Ali. In fact quit comparing any boxer to ali because it can't be done. The man was a one time thing and there will never be any reincarnation of him in another boxer now or ever.

I think things would have been a whole lot different for Ali had Angelo Dundee not saved his butt by cutting his glove at the end of the 4th round of the Henry Cooper fight. This is a well documented fact.

Ali should never be considered the greatest by anyone.

So your point is that there will never be a boxer as good as Ali?Do you get paid to see into the future?

Wlad can only fight the guys who are out there! It's people like you (and those on the other end of the spectrum who think Wlad is the absolute greatest ever) who make it a lose-lose situation....if Wlad wins you think it's because the division sucks and the others think he's supposed to....if Wlad loses you say he's no good and the other people think it's a fluke and it's not legit.

Wladimir is just a fighter he doesn't spout on about how great he is and how he's better than Ali, he can't be Ali only Ali can be Ali and Wladimir is just trying to be himself and he's very successful and both sides need to realize that Wladimir can do and has done great things and we should give him respect because he deserves it but so do the greats that came before him.

Wlad is the best thing going in a very lame division. The heavyweights haven't been stocked with talent for years. It's not his fault that the division sucks, and there is nowhere for him to go. So he's stuck being the best in this crap-hole-of-a-division
It's best to be quiet and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt!

Yes because those 7 seconds really changed the whole right around. If cooper really had him hurt, he could've finished him but he didn't so quit holding on the would've could've should've's.

Lyle listen to what i've been saying. I've been saying that wlad is the best in this division. This is in response to people who are putting him in the same league with already established legends. He's the best out there right now but if he becomes the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world he will be on the same list as ali, louis, and lennox and i'm not comfortable yet with him being there.

When you are comparing greatness, value of competition is a factor. Ali was the best fighter in the best era (you can't argue with that) so logic would conclude that he's the greatest. It's only been 3 or so years since the last time wlad lost. I am keeping in mind that he is only 31. If he continues his success my views will have to be different but it is too soon to put him in the top 10 ALL TIME list. He hasn't unified yet but to be honest i don't see how he could lose to any of the current title holders. If peter (who is much improved since his loss to wlad as wlad is improved form his previous losses) gets the belt from maskaev then it'd be a different situation.

He is the best now but when you look at overall all time greatness you have to look at more than just records (competition, title reigns, condition of the sport, etc.). In a few years the heavyweight division could be just as stacked as it was several years ago and if wlad continues his dominance into that era, it'd be hard to discredit him.

I understand but you have to agree that the reason people are able to compare him to Ali and say he's dominant like Ali is because there are no statistical differences between the two nothing that says by far Ali was the better fighter.....Rocky has a number 49-0-0...Joe Louis has a number 25 successful title defenses.......Ali and many other boxers do not have the good luck of having numbers to support their claim to the top spot.

Ali has opponents and right now Wladimir is looking for his...he's going to end up fighting Sanders again he's going to fight the biggest the baddest and everyone except for his brother which should be respected as no brothers have been forced to fight each other on such a level in the history of the sport!

Wladimir came from NOWHERE to beat Sam Peter....after a loss to Sanders, loss to Brewster, being knocked down by Williamson, and fighting some guys he had an easy time with to fighting THE MAN, the "NEXT TYSON" of the division and just handling him like he did it was an awesome performance, and I think he should get a ton of credit for that win....more than he gets from the average fan (but less than the guys who think he's unbeatable as no fighter is unbeatable).....that was a career defining fight for him.....avenging the loss to Brewster was big but not as big as the win over the UNDEFEATED power punching Sam Peter.

The things that aren't in Wlad's favor are the out of the ring things....he doesn't boast and brag, he doesn't have a cause like Ali but he does have CAUSES and he helps out charities more than anyone else in the history of the sport, and he doesn't have the irritating personality of Ali who always wanted to talk about ALI....Wlad is respectful and humble which is why people who don't like the way Ali acted love the guy. He's more like Marciano and Louis than Johnson, Holmes, and Ali...he's a quiet respectful champion and it's honestly very refreshing
