Unless you are going to hit Calzaghe 20 times as well, then you are just going to fall behind. Ward's only chance is a Calzaghe hand injury IMO. Calzaghe is unorthodox and you cannot train for a style like that.
Ward always finds a way to beat you. His timing is impeccable and his adapting to find his opponents weakness is up there with the best. I can see Ward do a Hopkins type spoiler victory in his own country.

I could also see Joe just throw machine gun punches and force the win as he did with Hopkins.
Kovalev beat him handily enough and Kovalev is a limited outptut, gets tired kind of fighter.

Exactly, it would be an ugly fight, but the machine would beat an opponent who only throws 30 punches a round. Ward has never had to work like that before, whereas we already know Calzaghe can beat a Hopkins type 9 rounds to 3.

I would have loved to see Toney vs Calzaghe.

At 168, both greats, I lean towards Toney, maybe even by late stoppage

Those two are my favorite fighters. Calzaghe takes Ward IMO through workrate. I think Toney beats Ward too as Ward couldn't hurt him or put a dent in him and I think Toney too would outwork him and just be slicker defensively. Ward isn't especially slick, he's more of a John Ruiz with hand speed. I think Toney would land the cleaner shots and work a decision.

Toney/Calzaghe? You would have to give me several valium and put me in a corner of the room somewhere. Too much. I couldn't predict it, though my hunch is that the work rate might be the difference. It's just too beautiful to even contemplate. You would have right there two unique styles and you would get a very fun fight. You never get a fun Andre Ward fight. It isn't even a style, it's just horrible.

Toney did well countering fighters but both Joe and Andre would simply out box him and force Toney to have to come forward. Toney would be easily out pointed.

Toney/Jirov showed that he could blast with a high output fighter and repeatedly counter and lead. Toney at his best should not be underestimated. Part of me really doesn't want to consider Toney/Calzaghe. It's like choosing a favorite pet. You just can't.

Jirov came forward without being clever enough to avoid the counter right hands. Joe would do it a lot better.

Ward v Calzaghe would have been a great fight. No idea who would win, but I know that each guy would be the best opposition that the other fought.

Very close fight, I don't think there would be a KO either way but reckon Calzaghes slightly faster punches would see him win by a few rounds on points.

RJ gave Toney a boxing lesson and that was fairly easy..JC does the same but probably gets knocked down in the process.

Part of me think Calzaghe's style would be good for Toney. Toney needed guys who put on the pressure so he could counter effectivley but another looks at James Toney's record and sees the trouble Montell Griffin gave him TWICE....he's certainly not beating Andre Ward and on his day Calzaghe was as slick as there was he might get off balance or dropped once but over all he would pitch a shutout.

When James Toney was at heavyweight I kind of wanted to see him and Tyson fight even though Tyson was well beyond his best.

The fact that Tyson was beyond his best was the only thing that made it competitive. I think the Toney that stopped Holyfield would have beaten Tyson too a that time.

Very true, but Toney's actual style was good to combat the style Tyson had. Tyson's best punches were hooks, uppercuts, and the 1-2 he threw didn't have length on it, quick but no length and with Toney's shell defense being so good (on his day) the rolling and countering would have been a sight to see.

I like the style matchup it's like Hatton-Mayweather but in a phonebooth, no running all over the gigantic ring Floyd had. Credit to Floyd, but Toney aint' putting in that roadwork lol.
