AMIR KHAN insists he would have turned his back on the alleged racist provocation that got Zinedine Zidane sent off in Sunday’s World Cup final.

The 2004 Olympic boxing silver medallist from Bolton is Muslim like French star Zidane.

And he said: “If someone said something like that to me, I’d just walk away from it. I’m a man and I can walk away.”

But, after hearing Zidane was allegedly called “the son of a terrorist whore” by Italy’s Marco Materazzi, Khan, 19, revealed he “understood” why he reacted.

And while light-welterweight Khan, who hopes to fight Craig Watson in September, has never been racially abused in his pro career he is adamant he could handle it.

Khan added: “People say things in the ring but I just stick to my boxing.”

Am I the only one who thinks that Marco Materazzi is being vilified beyond what he should be. Zidane should know that all this, granted taken to extreme by MM, bu to react the way he did was absolutely idiotic.
My first thought after he did it was that he might get away with it, and good for him, because if he's retiring from football, then they can't give him a football ban! I wasn't disgusted as all the pundits seem to be, it's a sport, and even at the lowest level people get tense and react badly.
Really, if Amir Khan thinks he's a bigger man than Zidane, we'll see it by what he achieves. And personally, however he takes all the winding up, boxing is a very different game, and if someone insults you in the ring, you hit them!
