He is a very well schooled fighter. There was a question the other day on the Trainer board and the leverage guard came up. McGirt uses that move several times in the fight. He also uses the outside parry on straight lefts aimed at his body.Real old stuff that you really have to be sound fundamentally to do.

What makes that performance amazing is that Simon Brown was considered the best Welterweight in the world right then, and Buddy made him look like an amateur.
The kind of fight where the shorn former Champ doesn't ask for a rematch with the new Champ.

James Buddy McGirt's manager/trainer was Al Certo who was also a tailor.
Three of Certo's customers were Jersey Joe Walcott, Willie Pep, and Jake LaMotta, and they'd talk Boxing while waiting on their custom-made suits. And a young McGirt was there to listen and learn from them.

McGirt showed masterclass on the highest level that night. A consummate blend of footwork and punch placement and to imagine a year removed from recouping a full blown shredded bicep and torn tendons and showed zero signs of it..bumping Brown, rolling off right lead and stunning then dropping him with left hooks in 10th! That shit was fantastic beautiful.

Yes this is a boxing Master class , Buddy was one of my favourite fighters.

I know Simon was a fantastic pro, but whenever I hear his name all I can picture is his lifeless body lying on the deck, throwing jabs in the air.

I have a 3 hour VHS tape of Buddy boxing various opponents and I do not have that for any other fighter. He is a great boxer and that was his best fight. I remember in an interview he said when he knocked down Brown that he was hoping he would not get back up. So Buddy was working hard in that ring although he looks in total control. Buddy had a bad shoulder injury which stopped him being a legend and Pernell beat him with ease.

In the 1st fight with a prime Pernell Whitaker, McGirt lost a 12 rd decision, but he still won quite a few rds though he was fighting with only one arm.

Too bad he had the shoulder injury, hit him right at the top of his game.
Never was the same fighter again.

The first Whitaker fight was close and he knocked Pernell down in the 2nd fight while fighting one handed. How he lost to Meldrick Taylor is something that I will never understand.

If u remember right, Buddy had an inner ear issue for the Meldrick fight n he didn't perform well, getting stopped in the 11th. His first fight with a prime, ATG Pea was great. He was a true pro n extremely balanced in all facets of the game. I would've liked to see him stay healthy longer and seen where he could've gone. On a side note: he was ripped when he fought and he has BLOWN UP since retiring. Some guys just let that weight balloon.
