    Default The Last of Us

This game is getting rave reviews and is the latest venture of Naughty Dog the wonder people who created Uncharted. For me Uncharted 2 is the best game of all time for the story, graphics and fun game play. This seems like the game to bring the Playstation 3 to its logically conclusion, though some might argue GTA5 will do that, but this looks like a much deeper and more meaningful experience to me. The graphics look amazing and by all accounts the story is what ultimately seals the deal. I am going to celebrate freedom by driving out and buying this and I imagine I won't leave the house until I have seen it through.

Anyone else excited about The Last of Us?

We have had this before, but the average game player is about 30 these days and the best games put most of Hollywood to shame in terms of the storytelling and script and what makes the action scenes fun and interesting is that it is you. I would argue that even a relatively straightforward shooter like Max Payne 3 has more soul and depth than most action films and then a game like The Last of US comes along and you are in an existential wasteland in the world of The Road. It bugs me when people belittle these games as though they are for kids. They are made for adults and should only be played by adults, it is dismissive and wrong to brush them off as being for 12 year olds. This isn't Super Mario on the Wii, this is gaming that is mature, dark and beautiful to look at. There are films for kids and films for adults and this is grown up gaming. Nobody would give a haughty look and say The Godfather was for 12 year olds as though it was a juvenile thing. It's one of the great films and likewise, this appears to have the hallmarks of being a truly landmark game.

Having recently played BioShock Infinite, it does seem that all the great games have a common identity.

You should have liked that game from what I've read about it.

I will say Zombie games are quite fun, Red Dead Undead Nightmare is very fun.

BioShock Infinite was fun and I really enjoyed it and the ending was very warped. Undead Nightmare was a fun game too. If you haven't played Max Payne 3 yet, then give it a spin as that is really good. Max is full of great lines and in a way it has a noirish feel which I know you like. Personally, I just loved being a jaded, middle aged man with an addiction to painkillers and killing people.

This Last of Us game looks to be pure eye candy, though you will probably need to play it again to appreciate with all these nutters trying to kill you. It's seemingly very much in the 28 days later style, but with more depth.

You mean you'd rather go out with your kids and have fun than sit in alone playing video games?

I dont buy that the average age of a gamer is 30. The average age of a game buyer maybe but not player. How do they get this info? Survey in a shop, checking online details? Either way its Mum or Dad buying games for kids. Then you'll have the smaller minority of loners that are actually buying them for themselves.

There are numerous polls out there and all it takes is a search. 30 is arguably at a low end, but a safe number.

One week you read about a man self-harming, the next week you read about a man immersed in video games.

    It's a mental world.

I started this game yesterday afternoon. Visually stunning but after a couple of hours I was starting to get bored and stopped - man it's slow, hope it picks up.

And the main character can't shoot for shit (ok thats part of the different approach the game has taken) but it's so bad in that John Marston would be turning in his grave.

I will give it another crack today
