This being the reason
Roach sure has a high opinion of himself. I don't buy the cant share thing. Especially not for an optional.
This decision may come back to haunt Cotto. Maybe not. The real reason is the Alvarez fight. An upset loss by a top ten middle weight would kill that fight. Alvarez is a pup in his prime and he can risk a fight with one of the guys mentioned although Kirkland could be a dangerous scrap.
A long rest for Cotto could do him a world of good but on the other hand his camp for a May showdown with Alvarez could kill him. Its a gamble but win or lose its most likely the final fight of his career.
Another road block is going to be Rubio regardless of how he does against the Kazak. Cotto will have to pay him step aside money because he remains the mandatory challenger. Perhaps that has already been done hence these plans by Cotto and Rubio taking a shot at the Wba.
Hard to say if Cotto is being wise here or not.
Cotto probably would have preferred to make a voluntary defence after beating Sergio but I have the feeling he could not agree an opponent and so has taken the rest of the year off rather than committing to a match which is a waste.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Momentum killer and its assuming a helluva lot to take near a year off. Strike when its hot, off the biggest victory in his career.
