Former Puerto Rican world champion boxer Wilfredo Gomez is in critical condition in a hospital following respiratory failure, a family spokesman said Wednesday.Erick Rodriguez told The Associated Press that the 56-year-old Gomez, widely considered to be the best Puerto Rican fighter in history, is struggling to recover from a lung infection.
"The next 72 hours are going to be crucial," Rodriguez said. "He's in danger of contracting pneumonia."
Wilfredo Gomez was one of the greatest Puerto Rican Boxers of all time winning 44 times with 42 by knockout, they didn't call him 'Bazooka' for nothing. He was even money going into the fight with Salvador Sanchez moving up to Featherweight in 1981. Sanchez skills are legendary in boxing and it required a man of such skill to stop Wilfredo Gomez. It took another great legend in Azumah Nelson to stop him in 11 rounds while leading on the scorecards in 1984.
