Default JMM/Cotto maybe only talk, but could be via a Cotto Provodnikov warm up fight?

Juan Manuel Marquez announced he will face Miguel Cotto at 147lbs this year in what will be an incredible rivalry involving Mexico verses Puerto Rico. As both agree to preparation fights first, training camps have started. Who wins gents how do you see it going?

Seems there is talk of a warm up fight first with Provodnikov set for June...

    Cotto on points

they cant need preparation fights at the point they are at in their careers, just making a bit more money out of it I reckon

not that I have a problem with that

Cotto is too big I think.

Great fight for each man at this point in their careers. Should be fun.

I think Cotto should win this against JMM as he still has more in the tank. Both are at the end of their careers taking on big fights with a good bit of rivalry. It is an interesting fight.

Great way to end it for the two greats but I'll hold off picking until I see the actual details. If it is indeed at 147 I’d most likely take Marquez. I just can’t see Cotto being a 100% at 147 anymore.

I'm a huge JMM fan but with his mobility hampered by knee issues (is this getting to be a theme for cotto opponents) and I don't believe Cotto will make 147 and probably outweigh Marquez by 10+ lbs on fight night. I think even the "Hulk" version of Marquez hurts Cotto at that weight. So as in so many other fights where Marquez erased his early knockdowns by fighting skillfully afterwards, I think the opposite will be true this time. Marquez can box beautifully, put his punches together, getting dropped by a bigger Cotto with better knees/mobility (especially when bradley already drafter up a blue print that didnt involve, pacquiaos in and out footwork or mayweathers speed) every 2 rounds will bury him on the scorecards if it goes that far.

It is an interesting fight, although kind of iffy at the same time. Could Cotto even make 147, is Marquez significantly more shot than he has been, etc. I'd pick Cotto and reckon he's to big at this point, but Marquez is very live if he's still the counter puncher he was.

@Master you asked for a link. I just saw this online on a facebook boxing group yesterday formed asa question and then saw this up the top on the list when Googling it, but I cant see a date to it. Maybe from Feb this year when there was word. Cotto maybe moving onto something else

So my apologies, but then theres this... Which brings up some interesting thought too if facing Ruslan Provodnikov as a tune up wonder who Marquez would pick to see if he still has it? Kahn Id like to see him and Kahn if Juans knee is fine and he has his old footwork back.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. "Unfortunately" because I'd be rooting for Cotto, of course. But facts are facts. Cotto is one of those fighters with a small weight window. He's too small for 160... but his days at 147 were over a long time ago. Surprised he would take the fight at that weight. Big fan of both fighters, though.

I was hoping Marquez would retire. The national rivalry always peeks interest but don't think this does much for either guy going forward in regards to what they have left vs top tier guys. Provo is in N.Y next out vs style friendly John Molina at 154. He doesn't belong at 154 but I'm betting that he is in Cottos future.

Marquez has no business trying to fight a much bigger guy now he is in his 40's. The Bradley fight showed that he is in decline and father time only becomes a bigger opponent with every passing day. Enjoy the money and the remember the good times. There is no reason to carry on.

I reckon JMM wants to fight again, but understandably only wants a big money fight. But at the back of his mind, I reckon he knows that Age, Injury and size has caught up with him.
I really hope he doesn't end up being one of those greats that ends up getting smacked about at the end of their career. A bit like Morales.

JMM should rightfully fight Manny and allow him to avenge that lucky punch. Then he should retire.
