yes that can be a problem. Thing is that when you breathe through your nose oxygenation is better. Breath in through the nose, and breathe out through your mouth. That's how it goes. I can't breathe on my nose when I get really tired because I have this deviation of nasal septum, I have to wait some more to be able to go to surgery. If your nose is ok, use it.

CRO-Luka, try Olbas oil with that deviation, mornin times especially it fixed me up pretty good. Failing that baking powder water solution. Horrible but it helps, honest.

Jogging isnt going to get you in shape. RUNNING and most importantly SHORT SPRINTS will get you into shape. Boxing is a sport of short intense bursts of action and then some aerobic moving around.

I suggest first and foremost you spar harder, keep good technique always, but push your pace while still being in control.

Second, do workouts that combine different aspects of fitness. For example, do a 3minute round of 1minute of 20yards sprints back and forth, 1minute of push presses, 1min of cleans(light weight, this is for conditioning). then take your one minute rest and repeat it for however many rounds you need to go.

Now that is an example, but you can vary what you do each rounds. I usually include more exercises. Good ones to rotate in are, Sprints, cleans, push press, pushups, situps, pummeling, pullups, burpees, firemans carry, jumping on a 12' box or step, jump rope, ect ect. The key is, your not going to be able to do everything for 1minute straight so be flexible, if say you burn out on the push presses, then switch to pushups if you can, or maybe go to a different muscle group.

Another thing to note is for every 3minute rounds you want to distribute somewhat evenly the muscle groups worked,

So for instance, sprints, push-press, and situps, work different muscle groups. Generally for the lower body you can do sprints and cleans or some other leg movement, but for upperbody its more important to split up the pushing and pulling and not overdo it.

I recommend pacing yourself at first because this is harder than you think doing 4rounds of 3 mins or whatever you choose to do. Last rounds go all out and push yourself, as you do this more increase your pace. This is hell, itll make fighting easy.

I wouldn't drink heaps but a little bit might help - if you are using all your glycogen stores and then getting tired which can happen in long workouts. You only need to sip it though. You don't need to drink a lot. You probably only need this for really long workouts after the first hour - not for every workout.

I'm very old fashioned in my views but as soon as I see a fighter, trained by modern methods and with the modern cluster of "specialists" in his camp, that can fight 15 like they used to I'll change my views.
Diet...Lord knows I'm clueless here but I know this. The best conditioned, strongest fighters I've ever seen were poor and poor people eat rice and beans. My experience mostly refers to fighters from Mexico- that is who I grew up watching and reading about- and rice and beans is a staple of the diet there. Emanuel Steward says the same thing; he says he cooks his fighters collard greens, beans and chicken. Jackie McCoy, the great trainer, called beans and rice "earth food" and swore that they made for strong fighters.
Breathing is a curious subject...Lots of fighters forget to breath, especially when they get excited, like in the middle of an exchange or when things are going very well or very badly. This is often an ignored subject but here is what I think, and I learned this from a 69 year old Australian opera singer. She was very scrappy despite being 4' 11" and weighing maybe 98 pounds. (google Elizabeth Sabine).
You breathe through your lungs. Breathe in short gulps of air; the most common way of running out of breath is not from lacking air but from having too much. If you breathe deeply but don't use up and exhale that breath, then your lungs get clogged with "bad air" and you can no longer take full breaths. So take short breaths and exhale fully- like when you punch for instance and don't forget to breathe. Doing this, you can keep your abdomen tight- so body punches don't knock the wind out of you- while moving and breathing easily.
The last reason I think you, like many others on this site, may lack stamina, is that you train to much. Look, the early morning 4 miles of roadwork is as much to build discipline as any thing else. Rocky Marciano didn't run millions of miles but he walked every place he went. Running- alternating sprints, jogging and brisk walking- is to sharpen your wind. You should train every day and not just to prepare for a fight. Stretch in the morning every morning. Run-as explained above- three times a week, or on days you don't spar. Don't jump rope on days when you run or spar- it is over using the legs. When training to fight 4 rounds, train to fight 4, not 10 or your body will not peak properly.
See, training for a fight is not something you begin to do when you learn about a fight. It is something you begin to do the day you begin boxing. A good, hard, sharp hour to 90 minutes a day is fine. Working 6-8 hours a day is foolish. And just get me started on cross training!

Rice and beans - carbs and protein - sounds pretty sensible CC greynotsoold.

So you don't agree with cross training? Too much?

You always hear about Olympic athletes training 5 or 6 hours a day - you think that's appropriate for just a few of the non boxing sports rather than boxing?

I think what they dont mention is that most of that is technique practice and doing drills that dont wear down the body. They definetly couldnt be going hard for more than 1hour. If they did they would be sacrificing intensity for volume which most the time isnt what you need.

For wrestlers their breakdown from what I know is this-

morning-alternate days of running then stretching or lifting then stretching.

    afternoon-technique and drilling

evening-wrestle live or other forms of conditioning

National coaches as Ive seen havent a clue on personal conditioning. They kill the kids Ive seen it I once had 6 in the National squad. The boys were always complaining and didnt like it but had to go for the selection process. When they came back Id give them a week off, Greys right , to many cooks.

A national coach ruined your shoulder for you hitmandonny!!!!!!! That sucks! How long did he take to get that to happen? you'd think having too many people drop out from injury might alert them to the idea that they're pushing you too hard?

    Ouch!

Well sounds like the weird shoulder snap thing someone tried to teach me but I could never get it. I guess you won't be wanting to train with him again but do you have a choice if he's the national coach?

Well thats exactly what he was tryna teach me, which is dumb cos im an inside fighter, but no...i wont have to train under him again. This is gonna be my last year as a competitve amateur. Everythin i do from here is in preparation for the other side of boxing.
