Default Chip off the ol' block? Or failure to launch?

So Tim Tszyu, son of ATG Kostya, just finished destroying Bowyin Morgan (21-2-0, 11 KO) in one round.... improving his own record to 17-0-0, with 13 KOs.

I would imagine Kostya is super-proud of his son, as he is being talked about as a potential contender to a 154-pound title. I haven't seen him in action yet... but as soon as he's in a televised event I'll make it a point to catch it.

This brings up the topic of father-son combinations, which has been written about a lot.

Of course you've got your great ones, like Tim Tszyu has a chance of becoming.... and you've got your duds, like JCC Jr. and my own local Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Few situations are probably as pressure-laden as being the son of an ATG boxer and wanting to follow in your dad's footsteps.

What other fighters have fallen into either category and have been either "chips off the ol' block" (or better), or "failure to launch"?

Ronald Hearns wasn't really a Tommy. Marvis wasn't Smokin', Hector Jnr wasn't a Macho Man, Chris Eubank Jnr simply isn't the best, Ross Minter (who i sacked) never made the cut .... failed to launch really

Lucas Matysse, Cory Spinks, Anthony Mundine, Arturo Gatti, Erik Morales, Dodie Penalosa, Tyson Fury, Buster Douglas, Ray Mancin and Floyd Mayweather all were more than just chips off the old block!

The jury is still out on Tszyu and also Ricky Hatton's boy.

    Good thread idea!

I wonder if he is on here!

Ross was an air conditioning engineer at a firm I worked for. Good guy, nothing wrong with his work or his attitude, but we closed down the entire depot so he became redundant along with everyone else.

At least he didn't punch me when I told him!

The closest Salvador Sanchez Jr ever got to duplicating his Pops feats is the hair style but think he's still plugging away at it. Hey Monk Foreman managed to go "undefeated" at 16-0 and then called it a career. Shane Mosley Jr not so much. The son of Ferocious Fernando Vargas makes his 160 pro debut this Saturday night. That should be interesting to how he follows his ol mans career and how much of a player Sr Vargas is in progression. Floyd Patterson guided and trained a chip off the block with adopted son Tracy H Patterson. Michael Hunter is doing his Dad proud but the clock is ticking.

Was Cory Spinks Leon's son?.. And if he was who was better? Cory had a pretty good run but Leon did beat some guy called Ali

Shane mosleys son never matched his father's level(Shane was pretty great to be fair)..

Yes, Cory Spinks was Leon's son but never was a fan of his. He did well beating Mayorga and taking on Taylor at middleweight but he ran a lot in his fights so never entertaining.

Whaa..... Felix Sr. was 8-8. So there wasn't much to measure up to. Not sure if that's what you meant, ryan.

    Aaron Pryor Jr. 21-11
    https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/325334
He looks like his dad, but doesnt have that swagger. met the kid about a decade ago, really nice. Aaron as a youngster was mean!

Evan Holyfield. Didn't realize he has several losses as well.

While Marvis wasn't on the level of his father, his sister Jackie was. She had no skills @ age 40 going in against a 20something Laila- Her style was so wild, Laila post fight looks dejected, got her nose broke.

    Ali named her "Sister Smoke"

Laila won the bout, but Jackie won the crowd over with her incessant nonstop playground style of fight. She was jack wild!!

better Chip or Chipette off the old block Laila or Jackie?

I got Jackie. Laila won 'cause of her last name and didnt want no rematch.

Post interview around 13:45 into vid she looks dejected while Sister Smoke was all smiles.

"I need to do a lot more sparring didnt feel good about the fight, during the fight and I dont feel good now."
    Laila on beating Sister Smoke

Only chip off the block I can think of is in American football, the manning family. Dad was good, but both sons won SBs!

I agree on the Ronald Hearns tip. He looks intimidating. 6'3 MW.

I saw him when he was 23-1 take on some dude named Marteze Logan in Detroit, one of the last fights at Joe Louis Arena.

Looking at his record a few minutes ago, he was 26-42 then. Ronald "The Chosen One" went the distance with a fighter that went on an 8 year losing streak. Now he's 26-70 Almost everybody KTFO'd this guy but the "Chosen One."

Wonder how Tommy feels about it. Mofos standing at 5'8 whoopin' his 6'3 inch massive reaching son.
