Floyd messed up in the first bout though.

    His first loss completely justified.

    Montell did milk it though.

Milk it indeed! What a fucking joke, he gets hit with a small shot, looks up at the ref like "come on, did you see that"... and then slumps over unconscious!

And I like Montell, he was really underrated, so awkward and athletic, but he milked that punch and put on an act, and he got two gifts vs James Toney IMO.

That was an impressive performance. No skill involved though, that was pure BAD ASS! Roy basically walks across the ring with his hands down, gets the distance he knows he close quickly, and as Montell blinks, Roy damn near takes his head off with a monstrous shot. The rest of the fight is Roy stalking him like a damn tiger and then scoring the most visually impressive knockout since Tyson stopped Berbick.

Roy was unstoppable back then, especially when out for revenge.

Roy was pissed about his first loss. Griffin was getting beaten in the first fight but was awkward and surviving. Roy smashed him in the return. No messing.

That and the pure amount of garbage that Griffin talked after the DQ loss (he's still talking) just fueled Roy's motivation. He talked himself straight into getting obliterated. From the first shot that sent him across the ring, I think everyone knew, Roy was leaving no doubt.

After the first fight Roy said "get me the rematch...", his lawyer/adviser said..."it will cost.." and Roy interrupted with "I don't care what it costs, get me the rematch!!!" I wonder if we will ever hear another fighter say those words again ever.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

I've seen Roy go out there and go easy on guys, he famously carried the great Mike McCallum to a decision out of respect.

But damn, when he was pissed off and out for blood, he was one of the baddest men in the history of boxing. Montell was no joke in the ring.

Since there wasn't the easy to respond media outlets like today- Roy couldn't counter the claims that happened after fight one. I vividly remember several commentators saying Roy's best days was at SMW.

That as well didn't sit well with RJJ. What an answer to the critic and Montell in the rematch. Tarver did a great job of tactically breaking down Montell with his win, but Roy, whew! Just annihilation at its finest.

I always felt he had to grow into light heavy a bit like Floyd at welterweight. I think Roy could have stayed at supermiddleweight

For sure, amazing how quick the so called "experts" will turn on a guy, eh?

I give Montell a lot of credit. He made that first fight very competitive, he was so awkward and explosive, fighting in such strange bursts, he really had Roy frustrated early and actually winning a handful of rounds vs a prime Roy Jones.

Montell was so underrated. He was giving Michalczewski fits in their fight a few years later before getting caught with a big right hand in the 4th, won the first three rounds and was winning the 4th before getting TKO'd (I thought it was a bit of an early stoppage).
