Default Great news - Magomed Abdusalamov

    http://www.espn.co.uk/boxing/story/_...new-york-state

Some good news after a long period of silence and a shameful lack of media coverage.

Directly after a brutal fight, he was examined by doctors, who did not pick up on his degenerating brain and who didn't even send him to a hospital for a routine check up. He was forced to stand in the street, vomiting, and trying to call a cab while suffering from terrible brain damage ......

He was paid a paltry $40k for the fight, and his training expenses, managers cut and tax would have come out of that. An insurance policy paid out $10k and his medical costs so far are in excess of $2 million.

Yet another example of a boxer risking his life for relative peanuts, suffering horrendous permanent damage and then being thrown on the scrap heap and forgotten. The guys who earn millions are the 0.1% of boxers who reach the top of a steep and rocky mountain

I'm glad this courageous and brave man has finally got some justice and will now be able to live (as best as he can) and his family won't be bled dry by medical costs.

What, you want all the low level fighters to make big bucks,
And Who’s going to pay them to fight when nobody wants to see it?
Soldiers, firefighters and police officers risk themselves too
And most of them are probably on $40k for the whole year!

I am a big tearful because it really has hit home how contrary some people can be without even suffering from damage in the ring.

It depends in which ring we are talking about I suppose?

It's sad when anyone suffers life changing injuries
But it happens everyday in car accidents and work related incidents
Boxing is a dangerous game and everyone should know that going in
Nobody is forced to Box so you have to accept the risks if you want to do it
Sad but he's not the first and he won't be the last.

it's not the case of anyone being paid anymore or less than anybody else, it is just a sad fact that little known fighters are forgotten about when this sort of thing happens.

and the fact that it was unavoidable due to the negligence of the physicians and ringside doctors is the worst thing about this story

The dude was complaining of headaches and pissing blood and was told to pay for his own taxi to hospital rather than offering him the use of the ambulance that was onsite, whilst waiting for the taxi he was staggering around and vomiting.

Boxing is a dangerous game and everyone should know that going in
Nobody is forced to Box so you have to accept the risks if you want to do it
boxing is a dangerous game and everyone knows the risks but you would expect a certain level of care and expertise from the medical experts.

anyone got any updates on Blackwell or gutknecht?

Problem with all the blame game stuff is you get stories of the family/associates overruling the quack's advice. All the "insiders/faces/docs" swear McClellan would have recovered fine if he wasn't dragged back to the states against all wishes

Blackwell got back in the ring for a few more clumps after all the charity events/donations raised for him. Haye gave him £100,000

This is great news. Saw a video recent of him refereeing an arm wrestling match between his children. It was sad to watch but also uplifting that he has improved some. Some is a hell of a lot better than none.

When a fighter complains of consistent head pain and dizziness you don't suture a f'n cut and suggest he take a flight home or leave him to call a cab to the ER. It's complete asinine failure. Was the damage done, every time a guy or gal is punched in the brain damage is always done, but do your job looking out for a fighter should run the course of pre present and post oversight wise. There are no 'easy' punches and yeh we all cheer but permanent injury is the 800 gorilla in the room of boxing not often mentioned. Sadly Mago has to get by and his kids and family suffer right with him. You never want to see a parent unable to hug his kids regardless of profession.
